''Portrait of a Man'' is a painting by the Italian Renaissance painter Domenico Ghirlandaio (1449–1494) executed in tempera on wood. Painting Domenico Ghirlandaio was an Italian Renaissance painter who was active in Florence. He was a representative of the Florentine Renaissance, along with Verrocchio, the Pollaiolo brothers and Sandro Botticelli. The painting is an early work of the painter, probably painted at the same time when he painted the frescos in the Collegiate Church of San Gimignano. Ghirlandaio was noted for capturing the facial expression of his sitters in a remarkable way, rendering them with animated expressions. The painting was cleaned and renovated, revealing the bright green background underneath a layer of oxidised pigment. The identity of the man depicted in the painting is unknown. Domenico di Tommaso Curradi di Doffo Bigordi (, , ; 2 June 1448 – 11 January 1494), professionally known as Domenico Ghirlandaio, also spelled as Ghirlandajo, was an Italian Renaissance painter born in Florence. Ghirlandaio was part of the so-called "third generation" of the Florentine Renaissance, along with Verrocchio, the Pollaiolo brothers and Sandro Botticelli. Ghirlandaio led a large and efficient workshop that included his brothers Davide Ghirlandaio and Benedetto Ghirlandaio, his brother-in-law Bastiano Mainardi from San Gimignano, and later his son Ridolfo Ghirlandaio. Many apprentices passed through Ghirlandaio's workshop, including the famous Michelangelo. Benedetto Ghirlandaio
Benedetto Ghirlandaio (1458–1497) was an Italian (Florentine) painter. His brothers Davide Ghirlandaio (1452–1525) and Domenico Ghirlandaio (1449–1494) were both painters, as was his nephew Ridolfo Ghirlandaio (1483–1561). From 1486 until 1493 he was active in France, where survives his only extant signed painting, an altarpiece of the ''Nativity'' at Nôtre-Dame in Aigueperse (Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne). Davide Ghirlandaio
Davide Ghirlandaio (1452–1525), also known as David Ghirlandaio and as Davide Bigordi, was an Italian painter and mosaicist, active in his native Florence. His brothers Benedetto Ghirlandaio (1458–1497) and Domenico Ghirlandaio (1449–1494) were both painters, as was his nephew Ridolfo Ghirlandaio (1483–1561). Michael Friedsam
Col. Michael Friedsam (1860–1931) was an American philanthropist of New York City. Friedsam was the former president of B. Altman and Company and one of the premier art collectors in America at that time. The Friedsam residence located at 44 East 68th Street was built in 1921. The five-story building fashioned in limestone was designed by Frederick Frost, with wrought ironwork by Samuel Yellin. Friedsam's collection contained numerous masterpieces by artists such as Vermeer, Rembrandt, Jan Van Eyck, and Botticelli. After Friedsam's death in 1931, the residence became a top-rated Catholic high school for girls, Dominican Academy.
