''Portrait of Johann Kleberger'' is a 1526 oil on limewood panel painting by Albrecht Dürer, signed and dated by the artist and now in Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Costantino Porcu (eds), ''Dürer'', Rizzoli, Milan, 2004 The work was produced in Nuremberg the same year as he produced his portraits of Hieronymus Holzschuher and Jakob Muffel. Kleberger was a rich merchant and financier who had married the widowed daughter of Dürer's close friend Willibald Pirckheimer. On its subject's death the work passed to his stepson Willibal Imhof, who then sold it to Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor. Painted in the format of a classical medal, possibly inspired by Hans Burgkmair's engravings of Roman medals, the artist shows his subject as a sculpture-like bust in a medallion in a circular gap in a ''trompe-l'œil'' wall. The ''Portrait of Hieronymus Holzschuher'' is a painting by German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer, dated from 1526, now housed in the Gemäldegalerie of Berlin, Germany. The signature is in the upper left corner, and reads ''HIERONIMVS HOLTZSCHVER ANNO DO II 1526 ETATIS SVE 57''. The work was executed in Nuremberg, the same year in which the German artist portrayed Johann Kleberger and Jakob Muffel. Holzschuher was a local patrician who was senator and septemvir in its councils. The panel has the same dimensions as the portrait of Muffel, and thus it has been speculated that they could have been commissioned for some official celebration and exhibited in the city's town hall. Willibald Pirckheimer (5 December 1470 – 22 December 1530) was a German Renaissance lawyer, author and Renaissance humanist, a wealthy and prominent figure in Nuremberg in the 16th century, imperial counsellor and a member of the governing City Council for two periods. One of the most important cultural patrons of Germany in his own right, he was the closest friend of the artist Albrecht Dürer, who made a number of portraits of him, and a close friend of the great humanist and theologian Erasmus. Biography Born in Eichstätt, in the Bishopric of Eichstätt, the son of a lawyer, Dr. Johannes Pirckheimer, he was educated in Italy, studying law at Padua and Pavia for seven years. Hans Burgkmair
Hans Burgkmair the Elder (1473–1531) was a German Painting, painter and woodcut printmaker. Background Hans Burgkmair was born in Augsburg, the son of painter Thomas Burgkmair. His own son, Hans the Younger, later became a painter as well. From 1488, Burgkmair was a pupil of Martin Schongauer in Colmar. Schongauer died in 1491, before Burgkmair was able to complete the normal period of training. He may have visited Italy at this time, and certainly did so in 1507, which greatly influenced his style. From 1491, he worked in Augsburg, where he became a master and eventually opened his own workshop in 1498. Burgkmair was a Lutheran.
