''Portrait of Cardinal Guido Bentivoglio'' is an oil on canvas painting of Guido Bentivoglio by Anthony van Dyck, now in the Galleria Palatina in Florence. It was painted around 1623 during the artist's stay in Italy - Bentivoglio had links to the artist's native Flanders. It achieved an immediate and lasting popularity and was referred to in an 18th century biography of the artist as "the finest, he made no other after it which could surpass it". The English painter Joshua Reynolds stated that "since van Dick icwas obliged to use crimson for this famous portrait, he placed a drapery of the same colour in the background and repeated the white f the lace in the cardinal's lapin a letter placed on a table and in the bouquet of flowers which he wished to introduce to create the same effect as on the table". Guido Bentivoglio d'Aragona (4 October 15797 September 1644) was an Italian cardinal, statesman and historian. Early years A member of the Ferrara branch of the influential Bentivoglio family of Bologna, he was the younger son of marchese Cornelio Bentivoglio and Isabella Bendidio. After studying at the universities of Ferrara and Padua, where in 1598 he received a doctorate ''utroque jure''— in both civil and canon law— he returned to Ferrara, to the humanistic studies that honed his elegant writing style. Anthony Van Dyck
Sir Anthony van Dyck (, many variant spellings; 22 March 1599 – 9 December 1641) was a Brabantian Flemish Baroque artist who became the leading court painter in England after success in the Southern Netherlands and Italy. The seventh child of Frans van Dyck, a wealthy Antwerp silk merchant, Anthony painted from an early age. He was successful as an independent painter in his late teens, and became a master in the Antwerp guild in 1618. By this time he was working in the studio of the leading northern painter of the day, Peter Paul Rubens, who became a major influence on his work. The Palazzo Pitti (), in English sometimes called the Pitti Palace, is a vast, mainly Renaissance, palace in Florence, Italy. It is situated on the south side of the River Arno, a short distance from the Ponte Vecchio. Sir Joshua Reynolds (16 July 1723 – 23 February 1792) was an English painter, specialising in portraits. John Russell said he was one of the major European painters of the 18th century.
