Portobelo District
The Portobelo District is one of the districts that make up the Colón Province, Panama. It covers an area of 397 sq.km, and the latest official estimate of population (for 2019) is 10,581.Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censo, Panama. The district capital is the town of Portobelo, the Spanish roadstead on the coast of Panama which replaced the original settlement of Nombre de Dios. History The site on which to found Portobelo was discovered on November 2, 1502 by Admiral Christopher Columbus, on his fourth voyage aboard the Santa Maria thinking he had found Kataya step. It was founded on March 20, 1597 by Francisco Velarde and Markets, replacing the city of Nombre de Dios, since it was disabled by your weather conditions. Cristo Negro (Portobelo)
''Cristo Negro'' (Black Christ; also known as "Nazareno"; nicknames, "Naza", "el Negro", "el Negrito", "el Cristo", and "el Santo") is a wooden statue of Jesus Christ in Iglesia de San Felipe, a Roman Catholic parish church located in Portobelo, Panama. The statue was found on the shores of the town's harbour. Life size, it is adorned with a robe that is changed twice a year, once during the Festival of the Black Christ and during Holy Week. Black Christ is venerated throughout the year, most particularly on October 21, during the Festival of the Black Christ. A similar image called '' The Black Nazarene'' is venerated in Quiapo, Manila, Philippines. Statue The origins of the statue are unclear. The wooden image of Christ washed ashore at Portobelo, picked up by fishermen. It was initially housed in a small church and venerated. Isla Grande
Isla Grande is a small island and Corregimientos of Panama, corregimiento in Portobelo District, Colón Province, Panama, off the Caribbean coast. It had a population of 1,037 . Its population as of 1990 was 626; its population as of 2000 was 1,055. During the right times of year, the water between the island and the mainland provides an excellent surfing environment.
