Portarlington, County Laois
Portarlington, historically called Cooletoodera (from ), is a town on the border of County Laois and County Offaly, Ireland. The River Barrow forms the border. The town was recorded in the 2016 census as having a population of 8,368. History Portarlington was founded in 1666, by Sir Henry Bennet, who had been Home Secretary to Charles II and to whom that King, on his restoration, had made a grant of the extensive estates of Ó Díomasaigh, Viscount Clanmalier, confiscated after the Irish Rebellion of 1641. After some difficulties, the grant passed to Sir Henry Bennet of all the Ó Díomasaigh lands in the King's and Queen's Counties, and on 14 April 1664 he was created Baron Arlington of Harlington in the County of Middlesex. So great was the anxiety of these new settlers to efface all ancient recollections in Ireland, that the Parliament of Orrery and Ormond enacted that the governor and council should be able to give new English names instead of the Irish names of plac ... Portarlington Railway Station
Portarlington station is a railway station on the Dublin-Cork Main Line. It is the branching-off/exchange point for services to Galway, Ballina, and Westport. The Galway/Mayo line diverges at the west end of the station via a single lead junction towards Athlone. The station is situated just outside Portarlington, County Laois, Ireland. The station formerly had a third track between the platforms "the centre or middle road" which was removed in 2005 when the platforms were lengthened and widened in preparation for the introduction of Mk 4 Inter City trains. Portarlington was a parliamentary borough partly in King's County (in the twentieth century renamed County Offaly) but mostly in Queen's County (now County Laois). The Portarlington Football Netball Club, nicknamed the Demons, is an Australian rules football and netball club situated in the township of Portarlington, Victoria, on the Bellarine Peninsula. Portarlington teams currently play in the Bellarine Football League and its home ground is the Portarlington Recreation Reserve, Portarlington. History The club was established in 1874. The club played in an early version Bellarine Football League that ran from 1895 to 1914. Reformed after World War I, the club continued to play locally until 1923 when it joined the Geelong Football Association. Portarlington used to wear the red and black Essendon jumper, but this clashed with Birreguarra when the club changed leagues. A new strip based on the Melbourne jumper of red and blue was adopted. Earl of Portarlington is a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It was created in 1785 for John Dawson, 1st Earl of Portarlington, who had earlier represented Portarlington in the Irish House of Commons. He was the son of William Dawson, 1st Viscount Carlow, who had represented Portarlington and Queen's County in the Irish House of Commons, and had been created Baron Dawson, of Dawson's Court in the Queen's County, in 1770, and Viscount Carlow, in the County of Carlow, in 1776. These titles were also in the Peerage of Ireland. The first Earl was succeeded by his eldest son, the second Earl. He was a Colonel in the 23rd Light Dragoons but disappeared the night before the Battle of Waterloo and thus missed the start of the battle. He then attached himself to the 18th Hussars, but after the battle was forced to resign his commission in disgrace, fell into dissipation and 'died in an obscure London slum'. John Dawson, 2nd Earl of Portarlington (26February 178128December 1845) was a British Army officer who fought in the Napoleonic Wars. Family He was the son of John Dawson, 1st Earl of Portarlington (1744–1798) who had been created Earl of Portarlington in 1785. His mother was Lady Caroline Stuart (before 1763–1813) the fifth daughter of John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute. Career He began his career as an ensign in the 20th Foot in March 1798 and was promoted to Lieutenant in December of the same year. On 24March 1800 he was promoted to captain in the 46th Foot before transferring to the 23rd Light Dragoons. After a spell as a major in the 4th Garrison Battalion and as a lieutenant colonel in the 10th Foot he returned to the 23rd Dragoons on 6April 1809. Henry John Reuben Dawson-Damer, 3rd Earl of Portarlington (5 September 1822 – 1 March 1889) was an Irish peer. On 17 November 1841, he was commissioned a cornet in the Dorsetshire Yeomanry. Lionel Seymour William Dawson-Damer, 4th Earl of Portarlington (7 April 1832 – 17 December 1892), known as Lionel Dawson-Damer until 1889, was a British peer and Conservative politician. Background Portarlington was the only son of the Hon. George Dawson-Damer, younger son of John Dawson, 1st Earl of Portarlington. His mother was Mary Georgiana Emma, daughter of Lord Hugh Seymour. According to a private letter between Louisa & Eddy Eliot, dated 27 Sep 1841, their brother's friend "Seymour Damer is gone to school in Liverpool". Political career Portarlington was returned to Parliament for the Portarlington constituency in 1857, a seat he held until 1865 and again between 1868 and 1880. In 1889 he succeeded his cousin as fourth Earl of Portarlington. However, as this was an Irish peerage he was not allowed to take a seat in the House of Lords.
