The Port of Liverpool Police is a non- Home Office ports police force with responsibility for Liverpool, Bootle, Birkenhead, Ellesmere Port and Eastham Dock Estates and Freeports, as well as the Manchester Ship Canal areas in the north-west of England. Mandate The Port of Liverpool police is accountable to the Department for Transport. Its officers receive their long service and good conduct medals from the department. Role, function and organisation The Port of Liverpool Police is established under the Mersey Docks and Harbour (Police) Order 1975. The Port of Liverpool is the enclosed Dock (maritime), dock system that runs from Brunswick Dock in Liverpool to Seaforth Dock, Seaforth, Merseyside, Seaforth, on the east side of the River Mersey and the Great Float, Birkenhead Docks between Birkenhead and Wallasey on the west side of the river. The port was extended in 2016 by the building of an in-river container terminal at Seaforth Dock, named Liverpool2. The terminal can berth two 14,000 container Post-Panamax ships. Liverpool Cathedral Constables are a cathedral constabulary responsible for providing security for Liverpool Cathedral. History Its officers follow a long-held tradition of cathedral constables dating back to the thirteenth century. At one time many Anglican cathedrals appointed ecclesiastical constables to uphold law and order in and around their precincts. Today Liverpool Cathedral is one of only three cathedrals nationally still to employ constables, along with York Minster ( York Minster Police) and Canterbury Cathedral ( Canterbury Cathedral Close Constables). The Mersey Tunnels Police is a small, specialised, non-Home Office police force that provides policing services for the Mersey Tunnels in Merseyside, England. The force, which comprises fifty one officers from Constable to Chief Police Officer is responsible for effective road policing of the Mersey Tunnels, Approach Roads and Exit Roads. It is privately funded by Merseytravel which in turn reports to the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority. Merseyside Police is the territorial police force responsible for policing Merseyside in North West England. The service area is 647 square kilometres with a population of around 1.5 million. As of September 2017 the service has 3,484 police officers, 1,619 police staff, 253 police community support officers, 155 designated officers and 208 special constables. Manchester Ship Canal Police (also known as Manchester Dock Police and the Port of Manchester Police) was a police force in the United Kingdom that was responsible for policing the Manchester Ship Canal. It was maintained by the Manchester Ship Canal Company between 26 December 1893, when the canal opened, and 31 January 1993. On formation in 1893 the force consisted of one superintendent and 15 other ranks. In 1977, it consisted of 103 constables. Members of the force were appointed as constables under two Acts of Parliament: the Canals Offences Act 1840 and the Harbours, Docks and Piers Clauses Act 1847 (which was incorporated by and with the Manchester Ship Canal Act 1885).
