Port Royal Railroad
The Port Royal Railroad was a South Carolina railroad that was constructed following the American Civil War. The line was chartered in 1856 but wasn't built until 1870. By 1871, it ran from Port Royal, South Carolina, to Yemassee, South Carolina. It was extended to Augusta, Georgia in 1873. That same year, the company declared bankruptcy and was sold to the new Port Royal and Augusta Railway in 1878. Although the railroad's ownership changed hands several times over the years of its operation, the physical railroad was in continuous operation until 2006, when the Port of Port Royal was finally closed by the State of South Carolina. In 2009, ownership of the railroad right-of-way was transferred to the Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority and was officially decommissioned. BJWSA began removing the rails in 2010 to prepare for water & sewer infrastructure and the creation of a rail trail. Portions of the Spanish Moss Trail opened to the public in 2012. American Civil War

Yemassee () is a small South Carolina Lowcountry, Lowcountry town in Beaufort County, South Carolina, Beaufort and Hampton County, South Carolina, Hampton counties in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The population was 1,027 at the 2010 census. Yemassee is near the borders of Colleton County, South Carolina, Colleton and Jasper County, South Carolina, Jasper counties. The Port Royal and Augusta Railway was a South Carolina railroad that existed in the latter half of the 19th century. The Port Royal Railroad Company was chartered in 1856 and the line was completed in 1870. Beaufort-Jasper Water And Sewer Authority
The Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority (often shortened to BJWSA) is a public water system and non-profit corporation which handles water and wastewater operations for many areas in Beaufort and Jasper counties in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina. The Authority was created under the provisions of Act 784 by the South Carolina General Assembly in 1954 to provide services to Beaufort County. In 1969, its powers were expanded to include wastewater facility construction and services. In 1983, the authority merged with the Jasper County Water and Sewer Authority and thus adopting the BJWSA moniker. Although initially set up to provide water and wastewater services to unincorporated areas, BJWSA has over time acquired municipal water and sewer systems for Beaufort, Port Royal, Bluffton, and Hardeeville. Rail trails are typically constructed after a railway has been abandoned and the track has been removed, but may also share the right of way with active railways, light rail, or streetcars (rails with trails), or with disused track. Spanish Moss Trail
The Spanish Moss Trail is a partially-completed, ten-mile multi-purpose rail trail in northern Beaufort County, South Carolina. Using the former Port Royal Railroad right-of-way now owned by Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority, the dedicated trail follows a north–south path from Seabrook to Port Royal while passing through Burton and Beaufort. Charleston And Western Carolina Railway
The Charleston and Western Carolina Railway (C&WC) was formed in 1896 to operate the lines of the former Port Royal and Augusta Railway (PR&A) and the Port Royal and Western Carolina Railway (PR&WC). The PR&A and PR&WC had originally been part of the Central of Georgia Railroad but the South Carolina Legislature had forced the railroad to give up the subsidiary lines. The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (ACL) took over the C&WC in 1897 but operated it as a subsidiary until 1959 when the ACL fully absorbed it.
