Port Gawler, South Australia
Port Gawler is a locality and former port on Gulf St Vincent on the central Adelaide Plains in South Australia. Port Gawler is located north west of Adelaide in the Adelaide Plains Council local government area at the mouth of the Gawler River. Port Gawler was named in 1867 and a government town surveyed around 1869, but was officially declared to have ceased to exist on 23 June 1960. The boundaries for the modern locality were created for the long established name in June 1997, incorporating both the former government town and the private subdivision of Milner. Local government The first local government body established in the area was the District Council of Mudla Wirra, proclaimed in 1854. Gawler is the oldest country town on the Australian mainland in the state of South Australia. It was named after the second Governor (British Vice-Regal representative) of the colony of South Australia, George Gawler. It is about north of the centre of the state capital, Adelaide, and is close to the major wine producing district of the Barossa Valley. Topographically, Gawler lies at the confluence of two tributaries of the Gawler River, the North and South Para rivers, where they emerge from a range of low hills. The District Council of Grace was a local government area in South Australia from 1874 to 1935, seated at Mallala. History The council was proclaimed on 2 April 1874. The Hundred of Mudla Wirra is a cadastral unit of hundred located on the northern Adelaide Plains of South Australia, first proclaimed in 1847. The hundred is bounded on the north by the Light River and on the south by the Gawler River. History The hundred was proclaimed on 29 November 1847 in the County of Gawler and named by Governor Frederick Robe, (at the same time as all the other Hundreds in Counties of Gawler, Light & Sturt were declared). The name ''mudla wirra'' comes from the Kaurna language, but may have been misinterpreted in multiple sources, perhaps arising from the online version of Manning's Index. The Hundred of Grace is a cadastral unit of hundred located on the northern Adelaide Plains of South Australia spanning the township of Mallala and the Grace Plains. The hundred was proclaimed in 1856 in the County of Gawler and named by Governor Richard Graves MacDonnell after Grace Montgomery Farrell, wife of James Farrell, Dean of Adelaide. The hundred spans a significant portion of the lower Light River, which flows from north east to south west through the area.
