Port Adelaide Racing Club
The Port Adelaide Racing Club (PARC) was founded in 1890. The first meeting of the club was held in the same year on a course located on Grand Junction Road and in 1895 transferred to a leased site at Cheltenham Park. In 1921 the club had sufficient funds to purchase the site for £25,000. Following a government decree the club was merged with the South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC) in 1973 and by 1975 administration of the course had been passed over to the SAJC. Cheltenham, South Australia
Cheltenham is a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It is located on Kaurna Land in the City of Charles Sturt. Geography The suburb lies between Port Road and Cheltenham Parade, which form its southwest and eastern boundaries respectively. The suburb is split in two by the Outer Harbor railway line. History Cheltenham Post Office opened on 8 February 1897 and closed in 1910. In 1923, Holden Motor Body Builders established a site known as the Holden Woodville Plant in Cheltenham. Three years later it had expanded to and was employing 5,500 people. The plant attracted a lot of people to live in the area and especially in the adjacent suburb of Woodville through the 20th century. However, Holden progressively moved its operations to its Elizabeth plant through the 1980s, leading to the closure of Holden Woodville Plant. South Australian Jockey Club is the principal race club in South Australia. First racing events The first horse racing events in South Australia took place at a well-attended picnic meeting held over 1 and 2 January 1838. In August 1838, riding his grey gelding ''Charley'', Fred Handcock won the first steeplechase event ever held in South Australia. Various racing events (including match races) continued throughout the 1840s, but without a regulating body. Early foundations of the S.A.J.C. The first incarnation of the South Australian Jockey Club (S.A.J.C.) was in 1850, when it ran a race programme at Brighton on 14 February. Thomas Shayle was the Hon. Sec. and Edward Strike the Clerk of the Course. Cheltenham Park Racecourse
Cheltenham Park Racecourse was a horse racing track located in the suburb of Cheltenham in Adelaide, South Australia, between around 1921 and 2008. History The Port Adelaide Racing Club began thoroughbred racing at the course and in 1921 the club bought the site on which the course stands for £25,000. Administration of the course was taken over by the South Australian Jockey Club in 1975. The racecourse was also once served by now-demolished Cheltenham Racecourse railway station on the Outer Harbor railway line. In November 2007, the SAJC sold the racecourse land for A$85 million for a new housing development. It was proposed that the proceeds of the sale be used to help fund the Victoria Park Racecourse redevelopment. However, following the decision to abandon racing at Victoria Park, it was decided to use the money for further development at the Morphettville Racecourse.
