''Porfirio'' is a 2011 Colombian drama film directed by Alejandro Landes. The film premiered at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and subsequently screened at other festivals including Toronto and Maryland. It won Golden Peacock (Best Film) at the 42nd International Film Festival of India. The film is based on the real-life story of Porfirio Ramirez, who is cast to play himself. Porfirio is paraplegic after being shot by a rogue police officer. Alejandro Landes
Alejandro Landes Echavarría (born in 1980, São Paulo, Brazil) is a Colombian-Ecuadorian film director, producer, screenwriter, and journalist. He is mainly known for directing Spanish-language films such as '' Porfirio'', a Colombian drama that was based on a true story, and the documentary ''Cocalero'' about Evo Morales's successful presidential campaign in Bolivia. Biography Landes was born in São Paulo, Brazil to a Colombian mother and Ecuadorian father. Landes received a B.A. in Political Economy from Brown University in 2003. Prior to becoming a filmmaker, Landes worked as an assistant producer for ''Oppenheimer Presenta'', a weekly news broadcast show. He also wrote for the '' Miami Herald''. Thimios Bakatakis (born 1970) is a Greek cinematographer. He has served as a cinematographer for various feature films, short films, music videos, and commercials, often collaborating with director Yorgos Lanthimos on his projects. Early life Bakatakis was born in Athens, Greece in 1970, and attended in the same city. He met director Yorgos Lanthimos while attending Stavrakos, whom he befriended and would later regularly collaborate with after their graduations. The Maryland Film Festival is an annual five-day international film festival taking place each May in Baltimore, Maryland. The festival was launched in 1999, and presents international film and video work of all lengths and genres. 42nd International Film Festival Of India
The 42nd International Film Festival of India was held on 23 to 30 November 2011 in Goa. The International competition (Feature) was chaired by Adoor Gopalakrishnan, and Short film competition was chaired by Basu Bhattacharya. For the first time the 42d IFFI had launched its own poster with a depiction of fest motif "Peacock", made as a "dancing peacock" by veteran film design and art consultant Thotta Tharani. The IFFI signature film was conceptualized by veteran film maker Shaji Karun. Paraplegia, or paraparesis, is an impairment in motor or sensory function of the lower extremities. The word comes from Ionic Greek () "half-stricken". It is usually caused by spinal cord injury or a congenital condition that affects the neural (brain) elements of the spinal canal.
