Popovo Saddle ( bg, Поповска седловина, ‘Popovska Sedlovina’ \'po-pov-ska se-dlo-vi-'na\) is the saddle of elevation 1550 m in Imeon Range on Smith Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica bounded by Drinov Peak to the north and Sevlievski Peak to the south. Overlooking Ovech Glacier to the east and Chuprene Glacier to the southwest. The saddle is named after the town of Popovo in northeastern Bulgaria. Location Popovo Saddle is located at . Popovo, Bulgaria
Popovo ( bg, Попово , from , ''pop'', meaning "priest", and the placename suffix '' -ovo'', literally "the priest's village") is a town in northeastern Bulgaria, part of Targovishte Province. It is the administrative centre of the homonymous Popovo Municipality. In 2021, it had a population of 13,324 and an absolute Bulgarian majority. The town was first mentioned in an Ottoman tax register of 1555. Popovo Saddle in Imeon Range on Smith Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica is named after Popovo. The Antarctic Place-names Commission was established by the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute in 1994, and since 2001 has been a body affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria. The Commission approves Bulgarian place names in Antarctica, which are formally given by the President of the Republic according to the Bulgarian Constitution (Art. 98) and the established international practice. Chuprene Glacier ( bg, ледник Чупрене, lednik Chuprene, ) is a long glacier draining the northwest slopes of Imeon Range on Smith Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. It is situated northeast of Bistra Glacier, southwest of Yablanitsa Glacier and northwest of Krivodol Glacier, Pashuk Glacier and Rupite Glacier, and flows southwest of Drinov Peak and Popovo Saddle, and west of Slatina Peak and Varshets Saddle southwestward along the northwest slopes of Antim Peak and Evlogi Peak into Drake Passage south of Villagra Point and north of Garmen Point. Ovech Glacier ( bg, ледник Овеч, lednik Ovech, ; ) is a 3.5 km long glacier on Smith Island, South Shetland Islands draining the southeast slopes of Imeon Range southeast of Drinov Peak and east of Popovo Saddle and Sevlievski Peak.
