Pope Model L
The Pope Model L was a motorcycle produced by Pope Manufacturing Company in Westfield, Massachusetts, between 1914 and 1920. The Model L was, at , the fastest motorcycle in the world when introduced. It was technologically advanced for its time, with features not found on other motorcycles, such as overhead valves, chain drive (from 1918) and multi-speed transmission. It was also expensive at $250, as much then as a Model T automobile. Cyclone (motorcycle)
Cyclone is a motorcycle that was manufactured by Joerns Motor Manufacturing Company located in St. Paul, Minnesota from 1912 through 1917. Later manufacture was moved to Sheboygan, Wisconsin. History The Cyclone was a short-lived brand but made its mark by doing very well on the board track racing circuits of 1910s through the 1920s. Cyclones also did well on the dirt track racing circuit of the day winning many races. In 1914, an Excelsior lost its one-mile speed record title to a Cyclone. In 2015, a 1915 Cyclone Board Track Racer previously owned by Steve McQueen was sold for US$852,000 at auction. It was the highest price paid for a motorcycle at auction at that time. Williamson Flat Twin
The Williamson Flat Twin was motorcycle made in Coventry, UK by William ('Billy') Williamson, who had been managing director of the Coventry-based Rex company. He teamed up with William Douglas (of Douglas Motorcycles to develop new prototype motorcycles under the name Williamson-Douglas and employed Billy's brother Harold as a test rider. Douglas had been developing a 964 cc water-cooled flat twin engine that could be used either for light cars or motorcycles. Billy Williamson fitted this engine into a frame with Douglas-Druid girder forks and a Douglas two-speed gearbox and a foot-operated clutch which was launched in 1912 at a cost of £82. In 1913 an air-cooled version was added to the range and in 1914 a kick starter was added. Thor Model U
Thor Model U was a motorcycle that debuted in the 1910s with a 7 hp V-twin in the Thor marque of Aurora Automatic Machinery Company of Illinois. The 1913 model came with a 61 ci (cubic inch) V-twin engine, with the V at an angle of 50 degrees. In 1914 the engine size was increased from 61ci to 76.25ci The motorcycle had chain drive with clutch and was overall a bicycle configuration with two handle bars and seat above a frame which housed the engine and connected the front and back. The V-twin has an angle of 50 degrees. Sears Dreadnought was a motorcycle sold by Sears in the 1910s. The motorcycle featured a V-twin made by Spacke. It was sourced from Spacke's cyclecar and had . This engine was also used by Dayton, Eagle, Minneapolis and Crawford. In addition to the internal combustion engine, it also had foot-pedals like a regular bicycle. A cyclecar was a type of small, lightweight and inexpensive car manufactured in Europe and the United States between 1910 and the early 1920s. The purpose of cyclecars was to fill a gap in the market between the motorcycle and the car. Chain drive is a way of transmitting mechanical power from one place to another. It is often used to convey power to the wheels of a vehicle, particularly bicycles and motorcycles. It is also used in a wide variety of machines besides vehicles. Most often, the power is conveyed by a roller chain, known as the drive chain or transmission chain, passing over a sprocket gear, with the teeth of the gear meshing with the holes in the links of the chain.
