Poowong
Poowong is a small dairying town located in Gippsland#South Gippsland, South Gippsland, in the Australian States and territories of Australia, state of Victoria (Australia), Victoria. At the , Poowong had a population of 360. It is from Melbourne and about north-west of Korumburra. History The first application for land in the Parish of Poowong was made on 17 April 1874 by James Scott for 320 acres of allotment 5, the selection made on behalf on his son Robert Scott. Four more selectors pegged out allotments within the next twelve months. On part of the Scott land a store, pub and butcher's shop were built. The Poowong Hotel was built by 1880 but it was destroyed by fire in 1883. A Post Office opened around January 1878. The first survey of townships allotments took place in 1879. The heavily timbered and hilly nature of the area meant selectors took years to clear enough of their land to make a living from their selections. Ellinbank & District Football League
The Ellinbank and District Football League is an Australian rules football and Netball League, based in the West Gippsland region of Victoria for smaller towns and villages in the regions of Baw Baw, South Gippsland and Cardinia. There are 11 teams in the league fielding 2 senior football sides and 2 football junior sides (U/16 and U/18) and 3 senior netball sides and 3 junior netball sides. History The EDFL was founded in 1937. In 2014, the league partitioned into two geographic divisions which operated as separate competitions with separate premiers. Jai Newcombe
Jai Newcombe (born 2 August 2001) is a professional Australian rules footballer with the Hawthorn Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Early career Growing up in the small rural town of Poowong in Southern Gippsland. Newcombe participated in the Auskick program at Poowong and playing junior football for the Poowong Magpies in the Ellinbank & District Football League. Newcombe was unable to secure a place in the Gippsland Power squads at ages 16, 17 and 18. Newcombe made the team in 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic he was unable to play a game. Newcombe's AFL career started with playing for Hawthorn affiliate Box Hill Hawks in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Wilfred Graham Burchett (16 September 1911 – 27 September 1983) was an Australian journalist known for being the first western journalist to report from Hiroshima after the dropping of the atomic bomb, and for his reporting from "the other side" during the wars in Korea and Vietnam. It was first proclaimed in government gazette on 24 Feb 1871 together with others from the Gipps Land District. Squash is a racket-and- ball sport played by two or four players in a four-walled court with a small, hollow, rubber ball. Hawthorn Football Club
The Hawthorn Football Club, nicknamed the Hawks, is a professional Australian rules football club based in Mulgrave, Victoria, that competes in the Australian Football League (AFL). The club was founded in 1902 in the inner-east suburb of Hawthorn, making it the youngest Victorian-based team in the AFL. Don Watson (born 1949) is an Australian author, screenwriter, former political adviser, and speechwriter. Early life Watson was born in 1949 at Warragul in the Gippsland region of Victoria, and grew up on a farm in nearby Korumburra. Academia and early career Watson studied for his undergraduate degree at La Trobe University and latterly completed PhD at Monash University before spending ten years working as an academic historian. He wrote three books on Australian history before turning his hand to TV and the stage. The Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) was a public utility board in Melbourne, Australia, set up in 1891 to provide water supply, sewerage and sewage treatment functions for the city. In 1992, the MMBW was merged with a number of smaller urban water authorities to form Melbourne Water. MMBW was abolished in 1992.
