Pontaubault () is a commune in the Manche department in north-western France. History Patton's VIII Corps crossed the Pontaubault bridge on 1 August 1944 into Brittany following the success of Operation Cobra Traffic From 29 July 1901 to 31 December 1933, Pontaubault was connected via the metre gauge Avranches–Saint-James tramway to Avranches and Saint-James, which operated three steam trains for mixed passenger and goods transport each day in both directions. Avranches–Saint-James Tramway
The Avranches–Saint-James tramway was a metre gauge railway on the English Channel in the Manche Departments of France, département in the Normandy Regions of France, region of France, which was put into service on 29 July 1901 and operated until 31 December 1933. Right of way concession President Émile Loubet authorised on 8 June 1899 the construction of the Secondary route, secondary railway line, to be operated by locomotives. Earlier, on 18 May 1899, the prefect of the Manche department had signed an agreement with the brothers Paul and Edmond Beldant and François Baërt, a public works contractor in Le Mans, to build and operate the line and, in particular, to transfer the tramway back when the concession expired. Operation Cobra was the codename for an Offensive (military), offensive launched by the United States First United States Army, First Army under Lieutenant General Omar Bradley seven weeks after the D-Day landings, during the Invasion of Normandy, Normandy campaign of World War II. The intention was to take advantage of the distraction of the Nazi Germany, Germans by the British and Canadian attacks around Caen in Operation Goodwood,Trew, p. 64 and thereby break through the German defenses that were penning in their forces while the Germans were unbalanced. Once a corridor had been created, the First Army would then be able to advance into Brittany, rolling up the German flanks once free of the constraints of the bocage country. VIII Corps (United States)
The U.S. VIII Corps was a corps of the United States Army that saw service during various times over a fifty-year period during the 20th century. The VIII Corps was organized 26–29 November 1918 in the Regular Army in France and demobilized on 20 April 1919. The VIII Corps was soon reactivated, being constituted in the Organized Reserves in 1921. It was allotted to the Regular Army in 1933 and activated on 14 October 1940 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. The VIII Corps fought across Europe from Normandy to Czechoslovakia in World War II.
