Pomponio State Beach
Pomponio State Beach is a state beach of California in the United States. It is located south of Half Moon Bay off California State Route 1. This coastal strip lies between Pescadero and San Gregorio State Beaches. It is made up of several miles of sloping, sandy beaches and a small lagoon below high sandstone bluffs. A parking lot and a picnic area are available for public use during the day. There are hiking trails and beach access. No camping is available. Dogs and campfires are not permitted on the beach. The beach was named after José Pomponio Lupugeym, a Bolinas Native American and outlaw. He was a captain of a group that called itself Los Insurgentes, and was captured and executed in 1824. José Pomponio Lupugeym
Ponponio (also known as Pomponio and Lupegeyun, c. 1799 – 1824), was the leader of a band of Native American fugitives in California who called themselves ''Los Insurgentes'' and who rebelled against Mexican rule and the mission system in California. Under his organization they raided settlements between the areas of modern-day Sonoma and Soledad in the early 19th century. Pomponio State Beach, Pomponio Creek, south of San Gregorio, and the Pomponio Trail in Pescadero Creek Park, San Mateo County, were named for him.Brown 1975. A lagoon is a shallow body of water separated from a larger body of water by a narrow landform, such as reefs, barrier islands, barrier peninsulas, or isthmuses. San Gregorio, CA
San Gregorio (Spanish for "St. Gregory") is an unincorporated community in San Mateo County, California, with a population of 214 people. It is located in the San Francisco Bay Area, south of Half Moon Bay. Just east of Highway 1, it is one mile (1.6 km) inland on Highway 84, from San Gregorio State Beach. It is also located 7 (11.4 km) north of Pescadero via Stage Road and 8 miles (12.8 km) west of La Honda via SR 84. Climate San Gregorio has a cool summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen climate classification Csb). A National Weather Service cooperative weather station has been in operation in San Gregorio since June 1, 1954. San Gregorio State Beach
San Gregorio State Beach is a beach near San Gregorio, California, United States, south of Half Moon Bay. Part of the California State Park System, the beach lies just west of the intersection of California State Route 1 and State Route 84. Geography San Gregorio Creek widens to form a small freshwater lagoon in the park behind a sand berm, or barrier beach, which typically blocks the mouth of the creek, forcing the creekwaters to flow underfoot as they seep into the Pacific Ocean. During the rainy season the creek often cuts through the sand berm and flows directly into the ocean. Historically the creek was a coho salmon spawning site, and the Department of Fish and Game is considering restocking it with coho to improve the salmon fisheries south of San Francisco. Pescadero State Beach
Pescadero State Beach () is alongside State Route 1, located 14.5 miles south of Half Moon Bay and 1.5 miles west of the city of Pescadero in San Mateo County, California. The beach has a mile-long shoreline with sandy coves, rocky cliffs, tide pools, fishing spots and picnic facilities. Across the highway is Pescadero Marsh Natural Preserve, a popular spot for bird watchers and other naturalists. About Pescadero State Beach has two distinct beach areas that are divided by the Pescadero creek. The northern beach is wider and more sandy and the southern beach is more rocky.
