Polo At The 1936 Summer Olympics
Polo returned to the Olympic program at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, after not being contested at the 1928 Games or 1932 Games. The 1936 tournament was the last time that the sport was contested at the Olympic Games. Argentina repeated as champions, winning gold medals in both of the Games in which the nation competed. Great Britain took silver; British polo players had earned medals in all five of the Olympic polo tournaments (including as members of mixed teams in 1900). Mexico took bronze, matching its previous performance in 1900. Background This was the fifth and final time that polo was played at the Olympics; the sport had previously appeared in 1900, 1908, 1920, and 1924. Each time, the tournament was for men only. Olympiastadion (Berlin)
The Olympiastadion (; en, Olympic Stadium) is a sports stadium at Olympiapark Berlin in Berlin, Germany. It was originally built by Werner March for the 1936 Summer Olympics. During the Olympics, the record attendance was thought to be over 100,000. Today the stadium is part of the Olympiapark Berlin. Since renovations in 2004, the Olympiastadion has a permanent capacity of 74,475 seats and is the largest stadium in Germany for international football matches. The Olympiastadion is a UEFA category four stadium. Besides its use as an athletics stadium, the arena has built a footballing tradition. Since 1963, it has been the home of the Hertha BSC. It hosted three matches in the 1974 FIFA World Cup. It was renovated for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, when it hosted six matches, including the final. Antonio Nava
Antonio Nava Castillo (September 9, 1905 – March 28, 1983) was a Mexican polo player who competed in the 1936 Summer Olympics. Born in Ixcaquixtla, Puebla, he was part of the Mexican polo team, which won the bronze medal. He played all three matches in the tournament. Humphrey Patrick Guinness (March 24, 1902 – February 10, 1986) was a British polo player who competed in the 1936 Summer Olympics. Biography He was born on 24 March 1902, and was educated at Eton College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. His father Lt-Col Eustace Guinness DSO died at Bakenlaagte in the Second Boer War. His mother was Isabel, daughter of Charles Bell, J.P., of Woolsington Hall, Northumberland, England. His great-grandfather Robert Rundell Guinness (1789-1857) founded the Guinness Mahon bank in 1836. Juan Diego Nelson (26 May 1891 – 7 August 1985 in Buenos Aires, Argentina) was an Olympic Argentinian polo player during the first half of the 20th century.
