At the 1900 Summer Olympics, a polo tournament was contested. Matches were held on 28 May, 31 May, and 2 June. Five teams competed. Most of the teams were of mixed nationality, with British and French athletes competing on three teams. There was no playoff for third place. Background The "Olympic" polo tournament, or the "Grand Prix International d'Exposition", was one of multiple polo tournaments played in Paris in late May and early June 1900. It was the first time that polo was played at the Olympics; the sport would appear again in 1908, 1920, 1924, and 1936. Each time, the tournament was for men only. Competition format The competition was a single elimination tournament, with no third place match. Teams did not have to consist of entirely players from a single nation at the time, with most of the teams competing being mixed. Polo is a ball game played on horseback, a traditional field sport and one of the world's oldest known team sports. The game is played by two opposing teams with the objective of scoring using a long-handled wooden mallet to hit a small hard ball through the opposing team's goal. Each team has four mounted riders, and the game usually lasts one to two hours, divided into periods called ''chukkas'' or "''chukkers''". Polo has been called "the sport of kings", and has become a spectator sport for equestrians and high society, often supported by sponsorship. Frederick Freake
Sir Frederick Charles Maitland Freake, 3rd Baronet (7 March 1876 – 22 December 1950) was a British polo player in the 1900 Summer Olympics and in the 1908 Summer Olympics. Biography He was born on 7 March 1876 and was educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge. In 1900 he was part of the BLO Polo Club Rugby polo team which won the silver medal. Eight years later as a member of the Hurlingham Club he won the silver medal again. In 1920 he succeeded to the Baronetcy of Cromwell House and Fulwell Park. He lived at the Old Manor House, Halford, Warwickshire and served as High Sheriff of Warwickshire in 1939. He died on 22 December 1950. Guillermo Hayden Wright (February 12, 1872 – 1949), or more accurately, William Hayden Wright, was an American polo player in the 1900 Summer Olympics. He was part of the Mexican polo team that won the bronze medal, alongside brothers Eustaquio, Manuel and Pablo Escandón. That year's polo tournament had five teams competing, most with mixed nationalities, they were the Bagatelle Polo Club de Paris, BLO Polo Club Rugby, Compiégne Polo Club, the eventual winners Foxhunters Hurlingham and the Mexican team (the only one without a team name). Captain Frederick Agnew Gill (25 May 1873 in Castletown, Isle of Man – 4 June 1938 in Emery Down) was a British Army officer and a polo player in the 1900 Summer Olympics. He was polo manager at the Ranelagh Club in London. Biography He was born in 1873 and educated at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. On 13 March 1893 he was appointed a second lieutenant of the 3rd Dragoon Guards. At the 1900 Olympics he was part of the Bagatelle Polo Club de Paris team, which won the bronze medal for polo.
