Polly Hurry
Polly Hurry (2 May, 1883, Kyneton - 5 August 1963, Frankston), was an Australian painter. She was a founding member of the Australian Tonalist movement and part of the Twenty Melbourne Painters Society. Early life Described in a 2009 review by Sasha Grishin as “a South Australian Meldrumite who has been almost totally forgotten,” Mary 'Polly' Hurry in fact was born in Kyneton, Victoria, on 2 May, 1883, daughter of Henry Hurry and Mary Herring and the middle child of two siblings, Maurice and George. She spent her early years there at the family home ''South Lodge'', 29 Donnithorne Street, then was educated at Ruyton Girls' School, Kew. Training Later, at the Kyneton School of Mines, Hurry took lessons in drawing and wood carving, then studied watercolour painting with the Scottish-born artist, John Mather. Kyneton
Kyneton ( ) is a town in the Shire of Macedon Ranges, Macedon Ranges region of Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. The Calder Highway, Calder Freeway bypasses Kyneton to the north and east. Kyneton is on Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung country. The town has four main streets: Mollison Street, Main street, Piper Street and High Street. Clara Southern
Clara Southern (3 October 1860 – 15 December 1940) was an Australian artist associated with the Heidelberg School, also known as Australian Impressionism. She was active between the years 1883 and her death in 1940. Physically, Southern was tall with reddish fair hair, and was nicknamed 'Panther' because of her lithe beauty. Biography Southern was born in Kyneton, Victoria, in 1860, the eldest of six children. She was the daughter of local timber merchant and farmer John Southern and Jane Elliott. From 1883 to 1887, Southern studied at the School of Design, National Gallery of Victoria under Oswald Rose Campbell and at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School under George Folingsby and Frederick McCubbin. Bertha Merfield
Bertha Merfield (1869–1921) was an Australian painter and muralist. She was a founding member of the Twenty Melbourne Painters Society. Biography Merfield was born in West Melbourne, Victoria on 30 January 1869 to Thomas and Isabella (née Wardman) Merfield. She studied at the Slade School in London, England and the National Gallery of Victoria Art School. She made generous loans of works from her collection to the inaugural exhibition of Castlemaine Art Gallery in 1913, including paintings by Tudor St George Tucker, Alexander Colquhoun, George Clausen, Frederick McCubbin and Blamire Young. She was a member of the London Society of Mural Decorators and Painters in Tempera. In 1916 her mural for the Cafe Australia in Melbourne received public acclaim. The building was demolished in 1938. Henrietta Maria Gulliver
Henrietta Maria Gulliver (29 October 1866 – 15 July 1945) was an Australian artist who specialized in landscape and floral still-life paintings. She was also a florist, horticulturalist and landscape designer. Life and Family Henrietta grew up in Sale, in Eastern Victoria. She was the fifth of eight children born to pharmacist Robert Shanklin and Maria Barbara née Ronalds, who was a professional fly tier and daughter of renowned fly fisherman Alfred Ronalds. Henrietta married George Ekins Gulliver in 1900 and had two daughters. Gulliver was a successful and wealthy pharmacist who developed and manufactured the famous Australian drug “Laxettes”. William Frater
William Frater (1890–1974) was a Scottish-born Australian stained-glass designer and modernist painter who challenged conservative tastes in Australian art. Early life and education Scotland William Frater was born on 31 January 1890 at Ochiltree Castle, near Linlithgow in West Lothian in Scotland. His father was forester William Frater (1863–1893) and mother Sarah Boyd (née Manson) a farm servant (1857–1900). After his father died from typhoid, and his mother from gastroenteritis, Frater and his three siblings were brought up by his paternal grandmother Ann and uncle Andrew who lived in neighbouring houses at West Ochiltree Farm. Edith Downing
Edith Elizabeth Downing (January 1857 – 3 October 1931) was a British artist, sculptor and suffragette. Life Edith Elizabeth Downing was born in Cardiff in January 1857. She was one of four children of the coal merchant and shipping agent Edward Downing, having two sisters and a brother, Edward. Her sister Mary was also to become an artist, whilst sister Caroline Lowder Downing was to join the Women's Social and Political Union with Edith. After attending Cheltenham College, Edith spent most of her working life based in Chelsea, London, Chelsea. She died in October 1931 in Surrey. Alexander Colquhoun (artist)
Alexander Colquhoun (15 February 1862 – 14 February 1941) was a Scottish-born Federation era Victorian painter, illustrator and critic. Early life and training Colquhoun was born the youngest child of Margaret (née Wright) and Archibald Colquhoun, merchant on 15 February 1862 and lived at 166 Hospital Street, Glasgow. Migrating to Australia on the '' Loch Vennacher'' when he was fourteen, the family arrived in Melbourne in 1876. The eldest daughter Margaret died soon after their arrival in Moonee Ponds, Melbourne, where they settled and where the oldest son Archibald, who had trained in Glasgow, practiced at the Alfred Hospital before moving to Bendigo Hospital where in 1880 he was appointed resident surgeon, but died 9 November 1892 shortly after his resignation earlier that year. Elsie Frederica Barlow (1876 – 15 November 1948), was an Australian painter and printmaker. She was a founding member of Twenty Melbourne Painters. She was also the first woman to have a solo exhibition in Castlemaine, Victoria. Biography Elsie Frederica Barlow née Hake was born in 1876 in Melbourne, Australia. She was one of seven children, the youngest of six girls born to Sidney Hake and Charlotte Hemsley. In 1894, Barlow enrolled at the Gallery School of Design where she was taught by Frederick McCubbin and Lindsay Bernard Hall. She attended the National Gallery School with her sister Dora Serle. Twenty Melbourne Painters Society is an Australian arts organisation that was established in 1918. The group split from the Victorian Artists Society to follow the Australian Tonalist Max Meldrum. Membership is restricted to 20 and is upon invitation only. The society follows the traditions of realist, tonal and impressionist painting and holds an annual exhibition.
