Polla, Italy
Polla is a town and ''comune'' of the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-west Italy. In 2011 its population was 5,327. History The area in which the town is located was settled since prehistoric times, as evidenced by finds of bones and ceramic in a nearby cave. During the Ancient Roman domination it was built a forum in today's quarter of San Pietro. Geography Polla is in the north of the Vallo di Diano, close to the Alburni mountain range and is crossed by the Tanagro river. Vespasia Polla (also known as Vespasia Pollia, born c. 15 BC, fl 1st century AD) was the mother of the Roman emperor Vespasian, and grandmother to the emperors Titus and Domitian. Polla came from an equestrian family at Nursia. Suetonius identifies her father as the Vespasius Pollio who was a three-time military tribune and a ''praefectus castrorum''. Her brother rose as high as the praetorship. The Vespasii were regarded as an old family of great renown, and Suetonius notes a site called ''Vespasiae'' where many of their monuments had been built. Vipsania Polla was an ancient Roman woman of the late Republic, she was the sister of emperor Augustus' right hand man Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa. She is best known today for the construction of the ''Porticus Vipsania''. History Early life Polla was born in the Late Roman Republic to an Equestrian family, likely from Venetia or Histria. Her father was Lucius Vipsanius Major and her mother an unknown woman. She had two brothers, Agrippa and Lucius Vipsanius Minor. Since Cassius Dio records her name as ''Polla'' and not ''Vipsania'' it's possible that she used ''Polla'' as her praenomen. She is also the only notable woman of her gens to not have a cognomen derived from her brother's name. Career Although Polla was a distinguished woman, little information about her has survived. Acerronia Polla
Acerronia Polla was a servant and friend of Agrippina the Younger, the mother of Nero. She was drowned in AD 59, when an unsuccessful attempt was made at the same time to drown Agrippina. She may have been the daughter of Gnaeus Acerronius Proculus, consul in AD 37. Tacitus' account indicates that Agrippina the Younger had set sail on a cruise on which Nero had secreted conspirators intent on killing her. Agrippina and Acerronia, along with the steersman Crepereius Gallus, were underneath a canopy on deck which had been secretly weighted with lead.
