Political Parties In Serbia
This article lists political parties in Serbia, including former parties that existed in the Kingdom of Serbia between the early 1860s and 1918. The Kingdom of Serbia operated under the multi-party system until 1918 when it became Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. After World War II, Serbia was reorganized into a one-party socialist republic. After the re-establishment of the multi-party system in 1990, new parties were established such as the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS; direct successor of the League of Communists of Serbia), Democratic Party (DS), Serbian Renewal Movement (SPO), Serbian Radical Party (SRS), Civic Alliance of Serbia (GSS) and others. Serbia was de facto a dominant-party state between 1990 and 2000, during the rule of Slobodan Milošević and his Socialist Party of Serbia. Serbia (, ; Serbian: , , ), officially the Republic of Serbia ( Serbian: , , ), is a landlocked country in Southeastern and Central Europe, situated at the crossroads of the Pannonian Basin and the Balkans. Authoritarianism is a political system characterized by the rejection of political plurality, the use of strong central power to preserve the political ''status quo'', and reductions in the rule of law, separation of powers, and democratic voting. Social Democratic Union (Serbia)
The Social Democratic Union ( sr, Социјалдемократска унија, Socijaldemokratska unija; abbr. СДУ, SDU) was a minor social democratic and leftist political party in Serbia. In 2020 Party merged into Party of the Radical Left. History The Social Democratic Union was registered on 13 May 1996. It was founded by former members of the Civic Alliance of Serbia, led by Žarko Korać, who opposed forming coalition with the right-wing Serbian Renewal Movement for the 1996 federal election. On 21 April 2002 the SDU merged with Social Democracy (SD) and founded the Social Democratic Party (SDP). A year later, disenchanted members of the SDP, led by Žarko Korać, left and re-founded the SDU on 29 March 2003. Social Democratic Party (Serbia 2001–2010)
The Social Democratic Party ( sr, Социјалдемократска партија, Socijaldemokratska partija; abbr. СДП, SDP) was a social democratic political party in Serbia. History The SDP was founded in April 2002 as a merger between Social Democracy (SD) and the Social Democratic Union (SDU). In the same year, the SDP joined the DOS governing coalition. A year later the SDP withdrew its support of the government resulting in its fall and an early election. Inner-party disagreements resulted in a split in the SDP. A group of members, led by Žarko Korać, left the SDP and re-founded the SDU in 2003. In the 2003 parliamentary election, the SDP ran in a coalition with the G17 Plus, which received 11.46% of the popular vote and 34 seats, 3 of which went to the SDP. Liberal Democratic Party (Serbia)
The Liberal Democratic Party ( sr-cyrl, Либерално демократска партија, Liberalno demokratska partija, LDP) is a liberal political party in Serbia. It is led by Čedomir Jovanović. History The Liberal Democratic Party was founded on 5 November 2005 by former members of the Democratic Party, led by Čedomir Jovanović, who were expelled in a party purge in 2004. Jovanović had become critical of the new direction of the Democratic Party and its newly elected president, Boris Tadić. The LDP gained its first seat in parliament after Đorđe Đukić defected from the Democratic Party. Satellite Party
Satellite Party was an alternative rock band formed by Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell following the break-up of Jane's Addiction in 2004. Other members included Carl Restivo (bass) and Farrell's wife, Etty Lau Farrell (backing singer and dancer). The band was initially formed as a collaboration between Farrell and Extreme member Nuno Bettencourt. Bettencourt departed from the project in July 2007. The band released one studio album in 2007, ''Ultra Payloaded''. Satellite Party dissolved in 2008, following Jane's Addiction's decision to reunite on a full-time basis. Serbian Nationalism
Serbian nationalism asserts that Serbs are a nation and promotes the cultural and political unity of Serbs. It is an ethnic nationalism, originally arising in the context of the general rise of nationalism in the Balkans under Ottoman rule, under the influence of Serbian linguist Vuk Stefanović Karadžić and Serbian statesman Ilija Garašanin. Democratic Party Of Serbia
The New Democratic Party of Serbia ( sr, Нова демократска странка Србије, Nova demokratska stranka Srbije, , NDSS or New DSS) is a national-conservative political party in Serbia. Initially known and formed as Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS), the party was formed as a conservative split from the Democratic Party (DS), and has played a key role in the opposition during the 1990s. It was a part of the "Together" coalition and was later a founding member of the Democratic Opposition of Serbia (DOS). Its first leader, Vojislav Koštunica, was elected president of Yugoslavia in 2000, a role which he served until 2003.
