''Pointe'' is an international magazine aimed at ballet dancers and students. Releasing four times a year, ''Pointe'' covers international news on company debuts, competition results, and rising stars. Pointe also contains reviews, company profiles, a calendar of events, ballet-oriented shopping guides, and much other information regarding the dance world. Virginia Johnson, the artistic director of Dance Theatre of Harlem, was formerly ''Pointe'' editor-in-chief from its creation until 2009. Macfadden Performing Arts Media acquired ''Pointe'' with the purchase of Lifestyle Media, Inc. in 2006. Macfadden's dance magazines were sold to Frederic M. Adji Cissoko
Adji Cissoko is a German ballet dancer. She is currently a principal dancer at LINES Ballet. Early life Cissoko was born in Munich, Germany, to a German mother and Senegalese father. While growing up, the family visited Senegal regularly and blended both cultures at home. While growing up, she studied the Vaganova method of ballet training. At age 18, she left Germany to study at School of American Ballet and American Ballet Theatre's Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School, both in New York. Career After graduating, Cissoko joined the corps de ballet at the National Ballet of Canada. The artistic director, Karen Kain, had seen her dance at the 2009 Prix de Lausanne. During her first year with the ballet, she was photographed for the cover of the August/September 2011 issue of Pointe Magazine. ''Dance Magazine'' is an American trade publication for dance published by the Macfadden Communications Group. It was first published in June 1927 as ''The American Dancer''. ''Dance Magazine'' has multiple sister publications, including ''Pointe'', ''Dance Spirit'', ''Dance Teacher'', ''Dance 212'', and ''DanceU101''. Virginia Johnson (dancer)
Virginia Johnson (born 1950) is an American ballet dancer, choreographer, and journalist. She currently serves as the artistic director of Dance Theatre of Harlem and is a founding member and former principal dancer of the company. From 2000 to 2009 she was the editor-in-chief of ''Pointe''. Early life Johnson was born and raised in Washington, D.C. She began training in classical ballet at the age of three under Therrell Smith, a friend of her mother's who had trained under Mathilde Kschessinska. When she was thirteen years old she was accepted as a scholarship student at The Washington School of Ballet, where she trained under Mary Day and was the only African-American student. Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) is an American professional ballet company and school based in Harlem, New York City. It was founded in 1969 under the directorship of Arthur Mitchell and later partnered with Karel Shook. Milton Rosenstock served as the company's music director from 1981 to 1992. The DTH is renowned for being both "the first Black classical ballet company", and "the first major ballet company to prioritize Black dancers". Macfadden Communications Group is a publisher of business magazines. It has a historical link with a company started in 1898 by Bernarr Macfadden that was one of the largest magazine publishers of the twentieth century. History Macfadden Publications ''Physical Culture'', Bernarr Macfadden's first magazine, was based on Macfadden's interest in bodybuilding.
