Point Rosee
Point Rosee (French: ''Pointe Rosée''), previously known as Stormy Point, is a headland near Codroy at the southwest end of the island of Newfoundland, on the Atlantic coast of Canada. In 2014, archaeologist Sarah Parcak, using near-infrared satellite images discovered a possible Norse site at Point Rosee, Newfoundland. If confirmed, it would have been the second known Viking or Norse site in Newfoundland and the second Norse site in North America outside of Greenland. Point Rosee was excavated in 2015 and 2016, by a team of researchers directed by Parcak and co-directed by her husband Gregory "Greg" Mumford. Port Aux Basques
Channel-Port aux Basques is a town at the extreme southwestern tip of Newfoundland (island), Newfoundland fronting on the western end of the Cabot Strait. A Marine Atlantic ferry terminal is located in the town which is the primary entry point onto the island of Newfoundland and the western terminus of the Newfoundland and Labrador Route 1 (Trans-Canada Highway) in the province. The town was incorporated in 1945 and its population in the 2021 census was 3,547. Port aux Basques is the oldest of the collection of villages that make up the present-day town, which consists of Port aux Basques, Channel, Grand Bay (Newfoundland and Labrador), Grand Bay and Mouse Island. Radiocarbon dating (also referred to as carbon dating or carbon-14 dating) is a method for determining the age of an object containing organic material by using the properties of radiocarbon, a radioactive isotope of carbon. Slag is a by-product of smelting (pyrometallurgical) ores and used metals. Smelting is a process of applying heat to ore, to extract a base metal. It is a form of extractive metallurgy. It is used to extract many metals from their ores, including silver, iron, copper, and other base metals. Birgitta Linderoth Wallace (born 1944) is a Swedish–Canadian Archaeology, archaeologist specialising in Norsemen, Norse archaeology in North America. She spent most of her career as an archaeologist with Parks Canada and is best known for her work on L'Anse aux Meadows, currently the only widely accepted Norse site in North America. She received a Smith-Wintemberg Award from the Canadian Archaeological Association in 2015. Education and career Wallace was born in Sweden to Swedish and Danish parents. She studied at Uppsala University and trained on archaeological sites in Sweden and Norway. Bog Iron
Bog iron is a form of impure iron deposit that develops in bogs or swamps by the chemical or biochemical oxidation of iron carried in solution. In general, bog ores consist primarily of iron oxyhydroxides, commonly goethite (FeO(OH)). Iron-bearing groundwater typically emerges as a spring and the iron in it forms ferric hydroxide upon encountering the oxidizing environment of the surface. Bog ore often combines goethite, magnetite, and vugs or stained quartz. Oxidation may occur through enzyme catalysis by iron bacteria.
