Taughannock Falls State Park
Taughannock Falls State Park () is a state park located in the town of Ulysses in Tompkins County, New York in the United States. The park is northwest of Ithaca near Trumansburg. The park's namesake, Taughannock Falls, is a plunge waterfall that is the highest single-drop waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains. History The region surrounding Taughannock Falls State Park was home to the Cayuga people prior to their displacement from the area during the Clinton-Sullivan Campaign following the American Revolutionary War. Taughannock Creek was used as a source of power for mills and a gun factory in the early 19th century. Tourism During the second half of the nineteenth century, steamboats, railroads and Victorian hotels were built in the region to serve tourists who traveled to view the falls. Ulysses is a town located in northwest Tompkins County, New York, U.S. The population was 4,940 at the 2020 census. The town was named after the hero of the ''Odyssey''. The Town of Ulysses is northwest of the city of Ithaca and is in the northwest part of Tompkins County. Taughannock Falls, the highest waterfall in the state, is in Ulysses in Taughannock Falls State Park. The falls drop , farther than Niagara Falls, making Taughannock Falls one of the highest waterfalls east of the Rocky Mountains. Trumansburg is a village in Tompkins County, New York, United States. The population was 1,797 at the 2010 census. The name incorporates a misspelling of the surname of the founder, Abner Treman. The Tremans spelled their surname several different ways; "Truman," however, was not one of them. The village's application for a post office established the present spelling. The Village of Trumansburg is located within the Town of Ulysses and is northwest of Ithaca, New York. History The village was incorporated in 1872, in the former Central New York Military Tract. The village was originally named "Tremaine's Village", after an early settler, Abner Tremaine (Tremain, Treman), who was granted the land for his service in the American Revolutionary War.
