Pocahontas High School (Arkansas)
Pocahontas High School is a comprehensive public high school located in Pocahontas, Arkansas, United States. The school provides secondary education for students in grades 10 through 12. It is one of two public high schools in Randolph County, Arkansas and the sole high school administered by the Pocahontas School District. Curriculum The assumed course of study follows the Smart Core curriculum developed by the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE), which requires students complete 22 units prior to graduation (24 for Honors or Student of Distinction). Students complete regular coursework and exams and may take Advanced Placement (AP) courses and exam with the opportunity to receive college credit. In addition, PHS has a concurrent credit agreement with Black River Technical College (BRTC) for students taking selected instructor-led and online courses. Pocahontas, Arkansas
Pocahontas is a city in Randolph County, Arkansas, United States, along the Black River. According to the 2010 Census Bureau, the population of the city was 6,608. The city is the county seat of Randolph County. Black River Technical College
Black River Technical College (BRTC) is a public community college in Pocahontas, Arkansas. It is named for the Black River which runs through the city. BRTC serves approximately 3,000 students annually through its degree programs, technical courses, and community educational offerings. History BRTC was established in 1972 as Black River Vocational Technical School on land donated by the City of Pocahontas, Arkansas. BRTC's original purpose was to provide vocational education for the Northeast Arkansas region. The college adopted its current name in 1991 and became an independent institution of higher education in 1993 at which time it offered associates degrees and college courses toward core requirements for four-year schools. Wear Kibler Schoonover (March 18, 1910 – May 12, 1982) was an American college football player. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1967. Edwin Ruthvin Bethune Jr. (born December 19, 1935), known as Ed Bethune, is an American lawyer and lobbyist in Washington, D.C., who was a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from Arkansas from 1979-1985. AAA is a member association of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFSHSA). Randolph County is located between the Ozark Mountains and Arkansas Delta in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The county is named for John Randolph, a U.S. senator from Virginia influential in obtaining congressional approval of the Louisiana Purchase, which includes today's Randolph County.
