Pobjoy R
The Pobjoy R is a British seven-cylinder air-cooled radial aircraft engine designed and built by Pobjoy Airmotors. Introduced in 1926, it was a popular engine for ultralight and small aircraft in the 1930s. A notable feature of the Pobjoy R was the propeller reduction gear which allowed the small engine to operate at more desirable higher speeds. A WikiProject, or Wikiproject, is a Wikimedia movement affinity group for contributors with shared goals. Fieseler Fi 3
The Fieseler F 3 ''Wespe'' (" Wasp") was a German aircraft developed in the early 1930s by Gerhard Fieseler. Little history of the aircraft remains due in part to destruction of records and documents during World War II. Design and development The aircraft configuration, either inspired by or copied from Alexander Lippisch, featured a flying wing design with winglets and two radial engines. The seven cylinder Pobjoy R engines were installed in a push-pull configuration and provided 75-85 horsepower each. A two bladed propeller manufactured by Gustav Schwarz can be seen in some of the few remaining photos. The design featured a canard and folding wings. Different versions of the aircraft had either a fully enclosed "greenhouse" style canopy or two open cockpits. Praga is a district of Warsaw, Poland. It is on the east bank of the river Vistula. First mentioned in 1432, until 1791 it formed a separate town with its own city charter. History The historical Praga was a small settlement located at the eastern bank of the Vistula river, directly opposite the towns of Old Warsaw and Mariensztat, both being parts of Warsaw now. First mentioned in 1432, it derived its name from the Polish verb ''prażyć'', meaning ''to burn'' or ''to roast'', as it occupied a forested area that was burnt out to make place for the village. The Pander Multipro was a two/three seat light monoplane aircraft with a high, braced wing, designed in the Netherlands in the early 1930s. Powered by a Pobjoy radial engine, three were built. Design Designed by Theo Slot, who was responsible for all of Pander & Sons original designs, the Multipro is variously described as a side-by-side two-seat or three-seat light aircraft. It had high and almost constant chord wings, braced on each side by a V-form pair of struts fixed to the lower fuselage longerons. The fuselage was a rounded, plywood-skinned structure, contemporaries remarking, as they had with other Panders, on the quality of the finish. The Nicholas-Beazley Pobjoy Special aka the Nicholas-Beazley Phantom I, aka the Wittman Phantom, aka the Flagg Phantom, aka the Reaver Special was a world record holding air racer of the 1930s Development The Nicholas-Beazley Airplane Company had imported a Pobjoy Airmotors engine with a gear reduction unit for use in its new design the Nicholas-Beazley NB-3. Designer Robert T. Jones computed the weight and balance for the setup and proposed a new design as an air-racer. Claude Flagg and H. F. Landis built the aircraft in their spare time and patented the wing design. Design The fuselage is welded steel with fabric covering. The wings used an early application of lightweight aluminum construction with U shaped cantilever spars with wire bracing and fabric covering. The Miles M.1 Satyr was a 1930s United Kingdom, British single-seat aerobatic biplane designed by Frederick George Miles, F.G. Miles and built for him by George Parnall and Company. Design and development The Satyr was designed in 1932 in aviation, 1932 by Frederick George Miles, F.G. Miles. It was a wooden single-seat aerobatic biplane powered by a 75 hp Pobjoy R engine. The aircraft (registered G-ABVG) first flew in August 1932. Although the aircraft flew well Miles decided to concentrate on monoplane designs and only one was built. Lippisch Delta IV
Alexander Lippisch's Delta IV was a continuation of his work on delta wing designs pioneered in his Delta I, Delta II and Delta III aircraft. Design and development The project began with an order from Gerhard Fieseler for a design that his company could build for him to fly in the 1932 Europarundflug air rally. The result was a highly unorthodox design, sporting large delta wings, canards, and an engine and propeller mounted in both the nose and tail of the plane. Fieseler built this design as the F 3 ''Wespe'' ("Wasp"), but it proved highly unstable, causing Fieseler to crash it on his first flight. Further refinements were unable to correct these deficiencies, and after one final crash, Fieseler abandoned the aircraft. __NOTOC__ The Letov Š-39 was a sport aircraft produced in Czechoslovakia during the 1930s. It was a conventional, parasol-wing monoplane with fixed tailskid undercarriage, and seating for the pilot and passenger in tandem, open cockpits. Because the cabane struts were very short, and the wing therefore placed very close to the top of the fuselage, the cockpits had the unusual arrangement of the passenger's being in front of the wing while the pilot's was behind it. The outer half of each wing was fitted with fixed slats along the leading edge. An initial batch of 23 machines was built for use by Czech aeroclubs. These were followed by batches of aircraft with alternative powerplants. The Landgraf H-2 was an American single-seat twin-rotor helicopter designed by Fred Landgraf and built by the Landgraf Helicopter Company of Los Angeles, California. Although awarded a development contract by the United States Army, it was not developed and was overtaken by more advanced designs. Design and development Fred Landgraf formed the Landgraf Helicopter Company in September 1943 to develop and manufacture the H-2. It had an enclosed structure for one pilot and an 85 hp (63 kW) radial engine driving two rotors, each rotor fitted to a short boom on each side of the fuselage. It had a fixed tricycle landing gear. The H-2 first flew on 2 November 1944 and the company was awarded a development contract by the United States Army.
