''Pleuroncodes planipes'', sometimes called the pelagic red crab (or simply " red crab"), tuna crab or ', is a species of squat lobster from the eastern Pacific Ocean. Description ''Pleuroncodes planipes'' is a bright red animal, up to long. It resembles a true lobster, but has a shorter abdomen. Taxonomic history ''Pleuroncodes planipes'' was first described by William Stimpson in 1860. In his description, Stimpson noted that ''P. planipes'' was very close to '' P. monodon'', the only other species in the genus. Distribution ''Pleuroncodes planipes'' lives on the continental shelf west of Mexico. It is usually found only south-west of San Diego, but in warmer years, its range may extend northwards into California. This is usually indicative of an El Niño event. Adults migrate vertically to near the ocean surface and large numbers occasionally wash up on beaches during warm water events. The southern limit of the species' range is in Chile. ''Pleuroncodes monodon'', sometimes called the red squat lobster, is a species of squat lobster from the south-eastern Pacific Ocean, where it is the subject of commercial fishery alongside the species ''Cervimunida johni''. Fishery The fishery of ''P. monodon'' in Chile is divided into two areas, of which the southern unit is the more important. The artisanal fishery of ''P. monodon'' was banned in the southern unit for three years, from 1980 to 1982, in an attempt to restore the collapsing population. Afterwards, quotas were put in place to limit the fishery, although another three-year ban, was required from 1989 to 1991. Fishing for ''P. monodon'' has again resumed, but at far lower levels than before the initial regulation. Distribution ''Pleuroncodes monodon'' is found from 41° S in Chile to 15° N in Mexico. Squat lobsters are dorsoventrally flattened crustaceans with long tails held curled beneath the cephalothorax. They are found in the two superfamilies Galatheoidea and Chirostyloidea, which form part of the decapod infraorder Anomura, alongside groups including the hermit crabs and mole crabs. They are distributed worldwide in the oceans, and occur from near the surface to deep sea hydrothermal vents, with one species occupying caves above sea level. More than 900 species have been described, in around 60 genera. Some species form dense aggregations, either on the sea floor or in the water column, and a small number are commercially fished. Munididae
The Munididae are a family of squat lobsters, taxonomically separated from the family Galatheidae in 2010. Description and ecology The squat lobsters in the family Munididae can be distinguished from other families by the presence of a trispinose frontal edge to the carapace, as well as a central rostrum, and two spines extend forward from above the eyes. Although a few species enter shallow water, the majority of species in the Munididae are deep-water taxa, in contrast to the mostly shallow-water Galatheidae. Taxonomy The genera now included in the family Munididae had previously been included in a wider Galatheidae. William Stimpson
William Stimpson (February 14, 1832 – May 26, 1872) was a noted American scientist. He was interested particularly in marine biology. Stimpson became an important early contributor to the work of the Smithsonian Institution and later, director of the Chicago Academy of Sciences. Biography Stimpson was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Herbert Hathorne Stimpson and Mary Ann Devereau Brewer. The Stimpsons were of the colonial stock of Massachusetts, the earliest known member of the family being James Stimpson, who was married in 1661, in Milton. His mother died at an early age. William Stimpson's father was an ingenious inventor, and a leading merchant of Boston in the mid decades of the nineteenth century, trading as "H. & F. Stimpson, stoves and furnaces, corner of Congress and Water Streets. It was he who invented the "Stimpson range", the first sheet-iron cooking stove, famous in its day throughout New England.
