Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary
Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary located in Lenox, Massachusetts owned by the Massachusetts Audubon Society. There are 7 miles of trails and a large pond on Yokun Brook. The Overbrook Trail leads to the summit of Lenox Mountain (2126 feet). Pleasant Valley has an outdoor summer day camp, seasonal special events, and year-round educational programs for preschoolers to adults. Lenox is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. The town is based in Western Massachusetts and part of the Pittsfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 5,095 at the 2020 census. The Massachusetts Audubon Society, commonly known as Mass Audubon, founded in 1896 by Harriet Hemenway and Minna B. Yokun Ridge is a ridge in the Taconic Mountains in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, consisting of a well-defined series of contiguous peaks including West Stockbridge Mountain and Lenox Mountain. Maurice Broun
Maurice Broun (August 27, 1906 – October 2, 1979) was an American ornithologist, botanist, naturalist, conservationist, and author. Early life and education He was born in New York City to parents who immigrated from Romania. Both of his parents died from tuberculosis; his mother died when he was two weeks old, and his father died when he was two years old. Living in a New York City orphanage until he was about six years old, he was taken out by a Catholic family but the mother became ill and the foster father returned Maurice to the orphanage. When he was ten years old, a Jewish family became his foster family, and the family moved to Boston. At age fourteen he became interested in bird-watching in Boston Public Garden. He ran away from his foster family when he was fifteen years old and supported himself for the rest of his life.
