Plaza de Colón (''Columbus Square'', in English) is located in the encounter of Chamberí, Centro and Salamanca districts of Madrid, Spain. This plaza and its fountain commemorate the explorer Christopher Columbus, whose name in Spanish was Cristóbal Colón. Monuments The plaza, originally called Plaza de Santiago (''St. James Square''), was renamed Plaza de Colón in 1893 to honor Christopher Columbus. The square contains two monuments. On the Paseo de la Castellana side there is a monument to Columbus whose base was finished in 1885. It is topped by a statue of Columbus. The second monument near the Calle de Serrano consists of a group of concrete macro-sculptures by Joaquín Vaquero Turcios. The calle de Serrano, or simply Serrano, is a street in Madrid, Spain. It is noted as location for luxury flagship stores. The urbanisation took off in 1863, with the construction of the first housing in the street. Initially known as Bulevar Narváez (Narváez Boulevard), the street received its current name following the 1868 Glorious Revolution, during which the namesake, the General Serrano (who had lived in the street), took a leading role. The Teatro Fernán Gómez (previously Centro Cultural de la Villa de Madrid) is a theatre and cultural centre in Madrid, Spain. The ''Monument to Columbus'' (Spanish: ''Monumento a Colón'') is a monument in Madrid, Spain. It lies on the namesake square, the Plaza de Colón. The basement of the monument is a Gothic revival work by Arturo Mélida while the topping statue is a work by Jerónimo Suñol. History and description The original idea to create a national monument to commemorate Christopher Columbus was promoted by Isabella II in 1864, yet the 1868 Glorious Revolution aborted the project. Later in time, the idea was resumed as the project could serve as commemoration of the upcoming marriage between Alfonso XII and María de las Mercedes.
