Playden is a village and civil parish in the Rother district of East Sussex, England. The village is located one mile (1.6 km) north-west of Rye. History Playden is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Pleidena; it is a largely rural parish, having no village centre, and the hamlet of Houghton Green is included in the parish. Playden's main occupation was fishing: the fish were salted in a one-time settlement known as ''Saltcote'', after the fact that it had a fish salting industry based there. ''Saltcote Street'' is now all that remains of that industry. Governance Playden Parish Council has four councillors, and meets monthly at the WI Hall in the village. The parish is within the Rother District of East Sussex. Rother is a local government district in East Sussex, England. Its council is based in Bexhill-on-Sea. The district is named after the River Rother which flows within its boundaries. History The District of Rother was formed on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, by the merger of the Municipal Borough of Bexhill, the Municipal Borough of Rye and Battle Rural District. Rye, East Sussex
is a small town and civil parish in the Rother district of East Sussex, England, two miles from the sea at the confluence of three rivers: the Rother, the Tillingham and the Brede. Brian Hargreaves
Brian Hargreaves FRSA, FRES (1935-2011) was an English artist and scientific illustrator, known for his depictions of Lepidoptera. Early life Hargreaves was born on 27 May 1935 at Sutton-in-Craven, Yorkshire. He was educated at Keighley Grammar School, Keighley School of Arts and Crafts and Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts. At Camberwell he met Joyce, who later became his wife. They were each awarded the National Diploma of Design there. As well as working as an artist and illustrator in her own right, she subsequently worked with him on some of his publications. Career Hargreaves early career was in church restoration; he gilded the lantern ball and cross that sits on top of the dome of St Paul's Cathedral. Rye Castle Museum
Rye Castle, also known as Ypres Tower, was built in the 13th or 14th centuries, and is situated in Rye, East Sussex, England. It is a Grade I listed building and has been scheduled as an ancient monument. History The exact date of construction is unclear although the possibility of creating a castle at Rye was mentioned in documents of 1226 and 1249. In 1329 Murage was applied for and works carried out during the 14th century before and after attacks by the French. Rye became one of the Cinque Ports and was involved in both defence and trade. It was originally called "Baddings Tower". The castle may have been used as a prison and in 1430 became the property of John de Iprys; which lead to the name Ypres Tower.
