Platyrrhinus Ismaeli
''Platyrrhinus ismaeli'' is a species of bat found in South America. Taxonomy and etymology It was described as a new species in 2005 by zoologist Paul Velazco. Its description was the result of a taxonomic split in Thomas's broad-nosed bat, ''P. dorsalis''. The holotype was collected in May 1987 near Balsas District, Peru. Phylogenetically, it belongs to the "Andean" clade of its genus. Other members of this clade are '' P. albericoi'', '' P. aurarius'', '' P. chocoensis'', '' P. dorsalis'', '' P. infuscus'', '' P. masu'', '' P. nigellus'', and '' P. vittatus''. '' P. masu'' is the sister taxa of ''P. ismaeli'', or its closest relative. The eponym of the species name is Ismael Ceballos Bendezú, a Peruvian mammalogist. Velazco named the species after him "in recognition of his important contributions to the study of Peruvian bats." Description It is a medium-sized member of its genus, with a forearm length of and a body mass of . The fur on its back is dark brown, and its ...

The Choco broad-nosed bat (''Platyrrhinus chocoensis'') is a species of bat in the family Phyllostomidae. It is native to Colombia, Panama, and Ecuador, where it is found in the Choco region lowlands. It is threatened by habitat loss. In 2013, Bat Conservation International listed this species as one of the 35 species of its worldwide priority list of conservation. Taxonomy This species was first encountered in 1984 in Colombia. The Matapalo broad-nosed bat (''Platyrrhinus matapalensis'') is a species of leaf-nosed bat described in 2005. It is found in South America. Taxonomy and etymology Before it was described, there were only 10 species recognized in the genus ''Platyrrhinus''. With the description of ''P. matapalensis'' and other species since 2005, the total is now at least 20 species. ''P. matapalensis'' was described as the result of a taxonomic split in Heller's broad-nosed bat, with the "Eastern" populations retaining the name ''P. helleri'', and the "Western" populations described as ''P. matapalensis''. The holotype for the species was collected in July 1954 in Zarumilla, Peru by Peruvian ornithologist Celestino Kalinowski. Its species name ''matapalensis'' is derived from the Matapalo District, where the holotype was found. Description It is a small member of its genus, with a forearm length of . The fur on its back is light brown, with individual hairs tricolored. Dorsal hairs are long. ...

Leaf-nosed Bats
The New World leaf-nosed bats (Phyllostomidae) are found from southern North America to South America, specifically from the Southwest United States to northern Argentina. They are ecologically the most varied and diverse family within the order Chiroptera. Most species are insectivorous, but the phyllostomid bats include within their number true predatory species and frugivores (subfamily Stenodermatinae and Carolliinae). For example, the spectral bat (''Vampyrum spectrum''), the largest bat in the Americas, eats vertebrate prey, including small, dove-sized birds. Members of this family have evolved to use food groups such as fruit, nectar, pollen, insects, frogs, other bats, and small vertebrates, and in the case of the vampire bats, even blood. Both the scientific and common names derive from their often large, lance-shaped noses, greatly reduced in some of the nectar- and pollen-feeders. Because these bats echolocate nasally, this "nose-leaf" is thought to serve some role in ...
