Placenticeras
''Placenticeras'' is a genus of ammonites from the Late Cretaceous. Its fossils have been found in Asia, Europe, North and South America. Taxonomy ''Placenticeras'', named by Fielding Bradford Meek, 1870, is the type genus for the Placenticeratidae, a family that is part of the Hoplitoidea, a superfamily of the Ammonitida. Description ''Placenticeras'' has a very involute shell with slightly convex sides and a very narrow venter. Side are smooth or with faint sinuous ribs. Early whorls have umbilical tubercles that in later whorls appear higher on the sides. Earlier whorls normally have lower and fine upper ventrolateral clavi. Ornament weakens in the adult and the last whorl may be smooth. The suture is with numerous adventitious and auxiliary elements, with saddles and lobes that are much frilled. Placenticeratidae is an extinct family of mostly Late Cretaceous ammonites ( cephalopod order Ammonitida) included in the superfamily Hoplitoidea, derived from the Engonoceratidae by an increase in suture complexity. Placeticeratids are characterized by rather involute compressed shells of moderate to large size with narrow flat or grooved venters (outer rims), at least on early whorls. Most are rather smooth or weakly ornamented except for a few later forms in which the outer whorls are strongly tuberculate. The suture has numerous, including auxiliary and adventive, elements. Saddles and lobes are typically deep, narrow necked, and raggedly embayed. The Placenticeratidae had their beginning in the Late Albian stage at the end of the Early Cretaceous, starting with '' Hypengonoceras''. The type genus, '' Placenticeras'', appears later and is known from the upper Santonian to the lower Campanian of the Upper Cretaceous. Fielding Bradford Meek (December 10, 1817 – December 22, 1876) was an American geologist and a paleontologist who specialized in the invertebrates. Biography The son of a lawyer, he was born in Madison, Indiana. In early life he was in business as a merchant, but he became deaf and spent his leisure hours were devoted to collecting fossils and studying the rocks of the neighborhood of Madison. Being unsuccessful in business with delicate health he turned his whole attention to science, and in 1848 he gained employment on the United States Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories as an assistant to D. D. Owen in Iowa, and subsequently in Wisconsin and Minnesota. In 1852 he became assistant to Professor James Hall at Albany, New York, and worked at palaeontology with him until 1858. Ammonitida
Ammonitida is an order of ammonoid cephalopods that lived from the Jurassic through Paleocene time periods, commonly with intricate ammonitic sutures. Ammonitida is divided into four suborders, the Phylloceratina, Lytoceratina, Ancyloceratina, and Ammonitina. The Phylloceratina is the ancestral stock, derived from the Ceratitida near the end of the Triassic. The Phylloceratina gave rise to the Lytoceratina near the beginning of the Jurassic which in turn gave rise to the highly specialized Ancyloceratina near the end of the Jurassic.
