The Place de la République (known as the Place du Château d'Eau until 1879) is a square in Paris, located on the border between the 3rd, 10th and 11th arrondissements. The square has an area of .Warner, p. 250 Named after the First, Second and Third Republic, it contains a monument which includes a statue of the personification of France, Marianne. The Métro station of République lies beneath the square, served by Line 3, Line 5, Line 8, Line 9 and Line 11. It is one of the network's main transfer points on the Rive Droite. History and architecture The square was originally called the Place du Château d'Eau, named after a huge fountain designed by Pierre-Simon Girard and built on the site in 1811.Hazan, p. 84. Émile de La Bédollière wrote that the water came from la Villette and that the fountain was "superb" in character. The Place de la République is a square located in the Bellecour quarter in the 2nd arrondissement of Lyon, France. It is crossed by the Rue de la République along a north-south axis. It belongs to the zone classified as World Heritage Site by UNESCO. History The square was created in the dense urban web of the Presqu'île at the same time as Rue Impériale (now named Rue de la République) in the second half of the 19th century when major works were led by the Prefect of Rhône Claude-Marius Vaïsse. Between 1862 and 1871, it was named Place Impériale, then renamed Place de Lyon. When the Rue de Lyon was renamed rue de la République (by a prefectoral order on 5 September 1878), the square probably received its current name. Originally, there was a fountain at the centre, flanked by two flower beds and trees at the east and the west. Place de la République ("Republic Square"; former german: Kaiserplatz, "Imperial Square") is one of the main squares of the city of Strasbourg, France. It is surrounded on three sides by five buildings only, of which none is residential: the Palais du Rhin, the National and University Library, the Théâtre national de Strasbourg, the Préfecture of Grand Est and Bas-Rhin, and the tax center ''Hôtel des impôts''. All of these buildings are classified as '' monuments historiques''. The fourth side of the square is devoid of buildings.
