Pizza Island
Pizza Island was a shared cartooning studio space in Greenpoint, Brooklyn established in 2010. It was established by Sarah Glidden, Julia Wertz, and Domitille Collardey, and included Kate Beaton, Meredith Gran, Lisa Hanawalt, Karen Sneider, and Deana Sobel Lederman. Unintentionally, it consisted of all-female cartoonists. History Sarah Glidden and Julia Wertz had the idea to create a shared cartoon space in October 2009, just as Domitille Collardey was planning to move from her native France to New York. The location of Pizza Island was discovered on Craigslist. According to Glidden, the name comes from a nonexistent restaurant they were mistakenly seeking one night. Pizza Island was located in Studio 2J at the Morgan Fine Arts and Film Center on 649 Morgan Avenue in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Kate Beaton
Kathryn Moira Beaton (born 8 September 1983) is a Canadian comics artist best known as the creator of the comic strip ''Hark! A Vagrant'', which ran from 2007 to 2018. Her other major works include the children's books '' The Princess and the Pony'' and ''King Baby'', published in 2015 and 2016 respectively. The former was made into an Apple TV+ series called '' Pinecone & Pony'' released in 2022 on which Beaton worked as an executive producer. Also in 2022, Beaton released a memoir in graphic novel form, '' Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands'', about her experience working in the Alberta oil sands. Historical development Political cartoons first set foot in the Middle East in the mid-nineteenth century as the first Ottoman cartoon was published in 1867 in the journal, Istanbul. Following it was the first cartoon in Arab press: Ya'qub Sannu's cartoon published in 1887 in Al-Tankit wa Al-Tabkit (Joking and Censure) newspaper. ''Tuca & Bertie'' is an American animated sitcom created by cartoonist Lisa Hanawalt for Netflix. It began streaming on May 3, 2019. It stars Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong, with a supporting cast including Steven Yeun, John Early, Richard E. Grant, and Reggie Watts. The first season received positive reviews, and was cited as one of the best shows of 2019 by several publications.
