Pistol River, Oregon
Pistol River (Tolowa language, Tolowa: chvt-ler’sh-chvn-dvn taa-ghii~-li~’ ) is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community and census-designated place in Curry County, Oregon, Curry County, Oregon, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census it had a population of 84. It is near the Pistol River and the Pistol River State Scenic Viewpoint, just to the east of U.S. Route 101 in Oregon, U.S. Route 101. The community of Pistol River takes its name from the stream that flows past it. James Mace, a militia soldier, lost a pistol in the river in 1853, during a skirmish of the Rogue River Wars, and it has been known as the Pistol River since then. The Pistol River post office was established in 1927. The Pistol River area is known for its windsurfing, and the International Windsurfing Tour holds the Pistol River Wavebash there annually. Rogue River Wars
The Rogue River Wars were an armed conflict in 1855–1856 between the U.S. Army, local militias and volunteers, and the Native American tribes commonly grouped under the designation of Rogue River Indians, in the Rogue River Valley area of what today is southern Oregon. The conflict designation usually includes only the hostilities that took place during 1855–1856, but there had been numerous previous skirmishes, as early as the 1830s, between European-American settlers and the Native Americans, over territory and resources. Following conclusion of the war, the United States removed the Tolowa people and other tribes to reservations in Oregon and California. In central coastal Oregon, the Tillamook, Siletz and about 20 other tribes were placed with Tolowa people at the Coast Indian Reservation. Central Curry School District 1 (CCSD) is a public school district headquartered in Gold Beach in Curry County, Oregon, United States. Its boundary, in Curry County, includes Gold Beach, Nesika Beach, Pistol River, and Wedderburn as well as the surrounding area. It also includes the remote community of Agness. History CCSD was formed in 1997 when four elementary school districts and one high school district were merged, because of an action by the Oregon State Legislature that required districts without a kindergarten through twelfth grade (K-12) educational program to merge into a single district that did offer such a program.
