Pirayeh Pourafar
Pirayeh Pourafar (Born) is an Iranian musician, tar player, and expert on Persian music. Pourafar learned the radif as a student of Grand Master Ali Akbar Shahnazi at the Royal National Music Conservatory of Tehran. She has directed two successful Persian music ensembles, Nava Ensemble and Lian Ensemble. Pirayeh Pourafar is a composer whose compositions have been noted for innovative sophistication, thoughtfulness, and commanding technique. She entered the Royal National Music Conservatory of Teheran at the age of nine, where she started her studies with Masters Houshang Zarif, Habiboallah Sallehi, Mahmoud Karimi and Grand Master Ali-Akbar Shahnazi. From these masters she learned the Radif of Persian Traditional Music. She obtained an extensive knowledge of theory and a greatly accomplished technique on the Tar. Ali-Akbar Shahnazi () (12 May 1897 – 17 March 1985) was an Iranian musician and master of the tar. Biography Ostad Ali Akbar Shahnazi was born in Tehran, Iran in 1897. His father, Mirza Hossein Gholi, another master of tar, named him Ali Akbar according to a very old tradition: the grandson should be named as his grandfather. His younger brother Abdolhossein shahnazi was also a master of tar. He recorded many pieces with noted vocalists of his time such as Eghbal Azar and Nakisa. Houshang Zarif ( fa, هوشنگ ظریف, also Romanized as "Hūshang Zarīf"; December 7, 1938 – March 7, 2020) was a master of tar and Persian classical music. Biography and career Houshang Zarif was born in 1938 in Tehran. He was a graduate of the Persian National Music Conservatory in Tehran; where he studied tar with Mousa Maroufi. Zarif worked with the Fine Arts Administration Orchestra, conducted by Hossein Dehlavi in the 1950s and was the professor of tar at the National Conservatory for several years; Hossein Alizadeh was among his pupils.
