Pippa Hale
Pippa Hale is a contemporary British artist, founder of the Northern Art Prize and co-founder of The Tetley Leeds. Early life Pippa studied for a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at Warwickshire College of Further Education in Leamington Spa, graduating in 1991 and going on at Leeds University graduating with BA (Hons) Fine Art in 1996. Practice Commissions In 2019, as part of a joint project developed by Rachel Reeves in partnership with Leeds City Council and Leeds Art University, Hale's work "Ribbons" was commissioned from a shortlist of three other artists to redress the imbalance of women portrayed within the public sphere. Warwickshire College Of Further Education
Stratford-upon-Avon College is an English further education college in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. History Funded by public money, the College began in Stratford-upon-Avon with the establishment of a School of Art in the summer of 1877. Weekly classes were held in a room in Stratford-upon-Avon Town Hall - a Private Morning Class for Ladies; a Private Afternoon Class for Gentlemen; and Evening Classes for Teachers in Public Schools, Artisans and others. In 1881 the School of Art moved to a new Art Studio in Sheep Street, Stratford-upon-Avon. In 1891, under the Technical Instruction Act 1889, rate support from the County Council was available, administered by Stratford Borough Council, to subsidise still further the Art School. Northern Art Prize
The Northern Art Prize was an annual arts prize, established in 2006 and first awarded in 2007, that was created to celebrate contemporary artists practising in the North of England, which it defined as the North, the North West and Yorkshire and Humber, as per the boundaries operated by Arts Council England. It was open to professional artists of any age and working in any medium. In 2008 it was described by ''The Guardian'' as the "Northern Turner Prize". It was last awarded to Margaret Harrison in 2013. Background The Northern Art Prize was founded in 2006 by artist and curator Pippa Hale of Project Space Leeds in collaboration with design and communications agency Logistik Ltd and Leeds City Council. The Tetley (Leeds)
The Tetley is a contemporary art gallery in Leeds, England, located in the art deco headquarters of the former Tetley's Brewery. The gallery was opened on Friday 28 November 2013. Background The gallery's opening was part of a multimillion-pound redevelopment of the former Tetley Brewery site. The owners, Carlsberg-Tetley ended ale and beer production at the site in 2011, demolishing all but the headquarters. This building was retained to provide commercial office space and, in 2013, space to rehouse an existing contemporary artist-led space and registered charity, Project Space Leeds. Upon its move, the charity began operating as 'The Tetley'. The charity took on the specific brief of operating as a Leeds-equivalent to the Cornerhouse in Manchester and Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead. Leamington Spa
Royal Leamington Spa, commonly known as Leamington Spa or simply Leamington (), is a spa town and civil parish in Warwickshire, England. Originally a small village called Leamington Priors, it grew into a spa town in the 18th century following the popularisation of its water which was reputed to have medicinal qualities. Rachel Reeves
Rachel Jane Reeves (born 13 February 1979) is a British politician and economist serving as Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer since 2021. A member of the Labour Party, she has been Member of Parliament for Leeds West since 2010. Born in Lewisham in London, Reeves studied at New College, Oxford and the London School of Economics before working as an economist at the Bank of England, the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. and HBOS. Leeds Arts University is a specialist arts further and higher education institution, based in the city of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, with a main campus opposite the University of Leeds. Baltic Centre For Contemporary Art
Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art (also known simply as (the) Baltic, stylised as BALTIC) is a centre for contemporary art located on the south bank of the River Tyne in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England. It hosts a frequently changing variety of exhibitions, events, and educational programmes with no permanent exhibition. The idea to open a centre for contemporary arts in Gateshead was developed in the 1990s, which was a time of regeneration for the local area—the Sage and Gateshead Millennium Bridge was also being conceived of in this period. Baltic opened in July 2002 in a converted flour mill, which had operated in various capacities from 1950 to 1984. Gateshead
Gateshead () is a large town in northern England. It is on the River Tyne's southern bank, opposite Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle to which it is joined by seven bridges. Leeds Civic Trust is a voluntary organisation and registered charity established in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England in 1965.
