Pipara Stupa
Pipara or Pipa (3rd century AD) was the daughter of , king of the Marcomanni in present-day Bohemia. She is notable for having a love affair with the emperor Gallienus, having been given to him by Attalus as a tool of appeasement. Attalus' invasion was one of many Gallic invasions, contributing to the Crisis of the Third Century, crisis of the third century. In 254 AD, the Marcomanni invaded Pannonia. Loath to fight the invaders, Gallienus forged a treaty with Attalus, concluded possibly in 258 AD. The treaty stipulated that part of Pannonia Superior, Pannonia superior be ceded to the Marcomanni, who were in turn trusted to prevent further incursions across the border. The emperor was given Pipara or Pipa, as a hostage or concubine. Marcomanni
The Marcomanni were a Germanic people * * * that established a powerful kingdom north of the Danube, somewhere near modern Bohemia, during the peak of power of the nearby Roman Empire. According to Tacitus and Strabo, they were Suebian. Origin It is believed their name may derive from Proto-Germanic ''*markō'' "border, boundary" (hence the English ''march'' or ''mark'', meaning "frontier, border", as in the Welsh marches and the kingdom of Mercia) and ''*mann-'' (pl. ''*manniz'') "man", ''*Markōmanniz'', which would have been rendered in Latinised form as ''Marcomanni''. The Marcomanni first appear in historical records as confederates of the Suebi of Ariovistus fighting against Julius Caesar in Gaul (now France) after they had crossed the Rhine from what is now southern Germany. The exact position of their lands at the time is not known.
