Pioneer Shire Council Building is a heritage-listed town hall at 1 Wood Street, Mackay, Mackay Region, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Harold Vivian Marsh Brown and built in 1935 by William Patrick Guthrie. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 7 December 2007. History The former Pioneer Shire Council Building was constructed to a design by Harold Vivian Marsh Brown in 1935 and occupied by the Pioneer Shire Council until 1994 when the Pioneer Shire was amalgamated with the Mackay City Council. John Mackay and John McCrossin first explored the area in which the Pioneer Shire was located in 1860. Returning to the area in 1862, Mackay established and subsequently lost, the extensive pastoral holding he had named "Greenmount". } Mackay () is a city in the Mackay Region on the eastern or Coral Sea coast of Queensland, Australia. It is located about north of Brisbane, on the Pioneer River. Mackay is described as being in either Central Queensland or North Queensland, as these regions are not precisely defined. More generally, the area is known as the Mackay–Whitsunday Region. Mackay is nicknamed the sugar capital of Australia because its region produces more than a third of Australia's sugar. Name The city was named after John Mackay. Shire Of Sarina
The Shire of Sarina was a local government area located in the Central Queensland region of Queensland, Australia. The shire, administered from the town of Sarina, covered an area of , and existed as a local government entity from 1912 until 2008, when it amalgamated with the City of Mackay and the Shire of Mirani to form the Mackay Region. Eungella, Queensland
Eungella is a rural town and locality in the Mackay Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Eungella had a population of 194 people. Geography The town of Eungella sits at the top of the escarpment of the Clarke Range at above sea level, falling to an elevation of in Netherdale to the immediate east. The southern branch of Cattle Creek forms on this escarpment and creates the fertile valley to the east, where it becomes a tributary of the Pioneer River in Mirani, which eventually flows into the Coral Sea at Mackay. The escarpment and several other parts of the locality are within the Eungella National Park, which extends into the neighbouring localities of Netherdale and Broken River and beyond. Netherdale, Queensland
Netherdale is a rural locality in the Mackay Region, Queensland, Australia. In the Netherdale had a population of 111 people. Geography Netherdale is the most western locality of the Pioneer Valley. The river does not pass through Netherdale but Netherdale is within its drainage basin. The Mackay–Eungella Road passes from the east to the west through the locality after which it climbs the Clarke Range to Eungella. The north and south of the locality are mountainous (part of the Clarke Range) and rise to 890 metres and 670 metres respectively. Between them lie the "valley" through which the road runs at an elevation of 140 metres (in the east) to 180 metres (in the west). The land use in the valley is a mixture of sugar cane and grazing like most of the Pioneer Valley. There is no development of the mountainous north and south of the locality. Finch Hatton, Queensland
Finch Hatton is a rural town and locality in the Mackay Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Finch Hatton had a population of 499 people. Geography Finch Hatton lies in the valley of Cattle Creek (a tributary of the Pioneer River) which flows from west to east through the locality. Although the centre of the locality beside the creek is at 100 metres above sea level, the northern and southern parts of the locality are mountainous rising to 970 metres in the north and 870 metres in the south. The valley contains the town, roughly centre of the locality. The Mackay–Eungella Road passes through the valley and the town from west to east, although it is called Anzac Parade within the town. Pioneer Valley Railway Line
The Mackay Railway was a line situated in the Pioneer River valley in North Queensland, Australia. It opened in a series of sections between 1885 and 1911. It had three short branches, parts of which were initially built by the local government. It closed in sections between 1959 and circa 2007. History Mackay, about 1000 km north of Brisbane, is situated at the entrance of a fertile river valley, and was quickly developed for agriculture, especially sugar cane. Sugar mills had been constructed with private cane tramways, meaning each mill had a local monopoly. The Mackay railway was built to allow growers to ship their sugar cane to alternative buyers, ending the mill monopolies. The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland.
