Pingtung City
Pingtung City (; Hokkien POJ: ''Pîn-tong-chhī'') is a county-administered city and the county seat of Pingtung County, Taiwan. History The area of modern-day Pingtung City was originally a village of the Taiwanese Plains Aborigines which they called "Akau", which means "the forest". After the expulsion of the Dutch, the village grew into a Chinese market-town called "A-kau" (). Empire of Japan In 1901, during the Japanese era, was one of twenty local administrative offices established. In 1909, this unit was merged with and to form . Beginning in 1920, the name was changed to , governed under Takao Prefecture. In 1933, the town was upgraded to City status. Republic of China After the handover of Taiwan to the Republic of China from Japan on 25 October 1945, Pingtung City was established as a provincial city of Taiwan Province in December the same year. Zhong-Sheng-Gong Memorial
The Zhong-Sheng-Gong Memorial () is a memorial in Pingtung City, Pingtung County, Taiwan. History The memorial was constructed in 1929 by the Zhen clan family members who moved to Taiwan from Guangdong during the Qing Dynasty in the 18th century. It was originally located on the banks of Wannian River. Over the years, more buildings were constructed surrounding the memorial. Architecture The memorial was built with traditional Hakka and Baroque architecture style. The memorial spans over an area of 3,010 m2 with two blocks and double bays. To honor their ancestors to show off their success, their relatives built the Zhong-Sheng-Gong Memorial in 1929. Pingtung Tutorial Academy
The Pingtung Tutorial Academy () is a former tutorial academy in Taiping Village, Pingtung City, Pingtung County, Taiwan. History The tutorial academy was built in 1815 during the Qing Dynasty rule of Taiwan by Hsiadanshui County Deputy Governor Wu Hsing-chung and scholar Guo Tsui Lin Meng in order to revive local scholastic conducts. In 1895, the tutorial academy was transformed into a Confucius Temple. However, lack of funding to repair the building led to the abandonment of the building. During the Japanese rule of Taiwan in 1937, the Japanese government planned to relocate the temple. However, due to scholars effort in calling out for historical preservation, the academy was relocated to its current site on Shengli Road. In 1977, a well-known architect directed its repair and restoration works. The renovation work was completed in 1979. The Pingtung Performing Arts Center () is a performance center in Pingtung City, Pingtung County, Taiwan. The performing arts center is Southern Taiwan’s first county/city-level concert hall with a pipe organ. Built by the Alexander Schuke Potsdam Orgelbau company in 2013, the bamboo organ has 3 manuals, 45 stops and 2,793 pipes. Pingtung Baseball Field () is a multi-use stadium in Pingtung City, Pingtung County, Taiwan. Pingtung Art Museum
The Pingtung Art Museum () is an art museum in Pingtung City, Pingtung County, Taiwan. History The construction of the building which houses the museum was completed in October 1953 and housed the Pingtung City Government. In July 2005, the city government moved to a new site and the old building was left vacant. In 2006, the city government signed an agreement with Pingtung County Government to lend the building to the county government and convert it into a museum. The building was then turned into the Pingtung Art Museum with funds from the Council for Cultural Affairs. On 16 January 2012, the lease agreement ended and the museum was handed over back to the city government. On 12 January 2013, the museum was officially opened to the public.
