Pineridge, California
Pineridge (formerly, Kenyon and Pine Ridge) is an unincorporated community in Fresno County, California. It is located southwest of Shaver Lake Heights, at an elevation of 4842 feet (1476 m). The Kenyon post office opened in 1890, the name was changed to Pine Ridge in 1892, to Pineridge in 1895, and closed in 1944. The name Kenyon is in honor of Silas W. Kenyon, its first postmaster. The community is home to Cressmans General Store (which was burned down in the 2020 Creek fire but is now reopened) and Pine Ridge Elementary School. It has its own Volunteer Fire department. Burrough Valley, California (once also called Burr Valley) is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills of eastern Fresno County, approximately thirty miles northeast of Fresno, California, at an elevation of about above sea level. Natural history Burrough Valley’s geology includes both igneous and sedimentary formations and a great deal of metamorphosis resulting from a history of frequent seismic activity. The area includes fragments of an ancient island arc scraped off of a subducting plate in the Mesozoic and later affected by the much more recent tilting up of the Sierra Nevada batholith and igneous intrusions. Tollhouse (formerly, Toll House) is an unincorporated community in Fresno County, California. It lies at an elevation of . Tollhouse is located in the Sierra Nevada, southwest of Shaver Lake and 18 miles southwest of Huntington Lake. It is home to 2,089 people. The town was created in the 1860s around the Yancy lumber mill. The name "tollhouse" comes from the fact that the community was also built up in connection to a now-defunct toll road running up the steep slopes of Sarver Peak to Pineridge and housed a toll house. History The city of Clovis began as a freight stop along the San Joaquin Valley Railroad. Organized on January 15, 1890, by Fresno businessmen Thomas E. Hughes, Fulton Berry, Gilbert R. Osmun, H.D. Colson, John D. Gray, and William M. Williams, in partnership with Michigan railroad speculator Marcus Pollasky, the SJVRR began construction in Fresno on July 4, 1891, and reached the farmlands of Clovis M. Cole and George Owen by October of that year. The railroad purchased right-of-way from both farmers, half from each – the east side from Cole and the west side from Owen – and ran tracks up the borderline between the two properties.
