Pine Ridge (region)
The Pine Ridge is an escarpment between the Niobrara River and the White River in far northwestern Nebraska (a small section extends into South Dakota). The high tableland between the rivers has been eroded into a region of forested buttes, ridges and canyons. Ecology The plant and animal life in the Pine Ridge is atypical for Nebraska; the ecology is very similar to the Black Hills, to the north. The dominant tree in the Pine Ridge is the ponderosa pine; deciduous trees (such as cottonwoods) are also present in canyon bottoms. The Pine Ridge is one of two regions in Nebraska that support bighorn sheep; elk, river otters, mule deer, and wild turkeys are also common. History The Pine Ridge region was the setting of the closing chapters of the Indian Wars. Whiteclay (Lakota language, Lakota: ''Makȟásaŋ''; "whiteish or yellowish clay") is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community and census-designated place in Sheridan County, Nebraska, Sheridan County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 10 at the United States Census, 2010, 2010 census. A significant part of Whiteclay's economy was based on alcohol sales to residents of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, located north across the border in South Dakota, where alcohol consumption and possession is prohibited. According to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission, beer sales at Whiteclay's four liquor stores totalled 4.9 million cans in 2010 (~13,000 cans per day) for gross sales of $3 million. The four beer merchants paid federal and state excise taxes (included in liquor's sale price) of $413,932 that year. Pine Island Ridge was a census-designated place (CDP) in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,199 at the 2000 census. Formerly a part of unincorporated Broward County, Pine Island Ridge was annexed into the town of Davie, Florida on 15 September 2006, and is now a neighborhood of that town. The natural area was once the site of hunting camps of the Tequesta Native American tribe, as well as a refuge for the Seminole during the Second Seminole War (1835-1842). Pine Ridge (Lakota: ''wazíbló'') is a census-designated place (CDP) and the most populous community in Oglala Lakota County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 3,138 at the 2020 census. It is the tribal headquarters of the Oglala Sioux Tribe on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. History The community was named for the pine trees on the ridge surrounding the town site. An early variant name was Pine Ridge Agency. The Pine Ridge reservation was the location of a violent shootout between FBI and activist Native Americans in 1975. Pine Ridge is an unincorporated community in Hale Township, Caddo County, Oklahoma, United States. It is located south of Fort Cobb at the junction of County Road 1380 and County Street 2550. History According to locals, the community got its name from the community of Pine Ridge, Arkansas, that was the setting of the radio show ''Lum and Abner'' which aired from 1934 to 1952. Legend says that the owner of the grocery store named it "Pine Ridge" after the radio show and over time the name was adopted as the name of the whole community. Pine Ridge is an unincorporated community in Adams County, Mississippi, United States. Located approximately northeast of Natchez, the settlement is older than the state of Mississippi. History A land grant was issued by the British government for Pine Ridge in 1771, in territory then known as British West Florida. Early settlers were of Scottish heritage. One of the first cotton gins in Mississippi was erected at Pine Ridge in 1798 by Thomas Wilkins. The Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church moved to Pine Ridge in 1808, and a session house was built next to the church in 1829. Church elders would conduct business at the session house, and a school was located there until 1904 when a public school was established in the area. The session house is likely the only extant structure of its kind in the state, while the church is the oldest active Presbyterian church in Mississippi. The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation ( lkt, Wazí Aháŋhaŋ Oyáŋke), also called Pine Ridge Agency, is an Oglala Lakota Indian reservation located entirely within the U.S. state of South Dakota. Originally included within the territory of the Great Sioux Reservation, Pine Ridge was created by the Act of March 2, 1889, 25 Stat. 888. in the southwest corner of South Dakota on the Nebraska border. Today it consists of of land area and is one of the largest reservations in the United States.
