Pine Ridge is an unincorporated community in Oden Township, Montgomery County, Arkansas, United States. It is located at . The original name was Waters, but the name was changed in 1936 to Pine Ridge through a vote of the city's town council. Waters was the basis for the fictional town of Pine Ridge, Arkansas on the radio show ''Lum and Abner'', and the name of the real town was changed to honor and match the fictional one that made it famous. Since that time, Pine Ridge has lost its incorporation and no longer has a municipal government. The two oldest buildings in Pine Ridge, the Huddleston Store and McKinzie Store, both of which date to the first decade of the 20th century, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and currently serve as a Lum and Abner museum and replica of the "Jot'em Down" general store heard in the radio series. Oden, Arkansas
Oden is a town in Montgomery County, Arkansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, its population was 180, down from 232 in 2010. Geography Oden is located in northwestern Montgomery County at (34.6189884, -93.7768637). Arkansas Highway 88 (Broadway Avenue) is the main road through the town, leading east to Pencil Bluff and west to Mena. Mount Ida, the Montgomery county seat, is southeast of Oden via AR 88 and US 270. According to the United States Census Bureau, Oden has a total area of , of which , or 2.75%, are water. The Ouachita River flows past the south side of the town, outside the town limits. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 220 people, 79 households, and 65 families residing in the town. Montgomery County is a county in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,487. The county seat is Mount Ida. Pine Ridge, Arkansas, was the fictional setting for the radio program ''Lum and Abner'', which ran for 13 weeks every year from 1932 to 1954 on WNBC (AM), WNBC. ''Lum and Abner'' was an American network radio comedy program created by Chester Lauck and Norris Goff that was aired from 1931 to 1954. Modeled on life in the small town of Waters, Arkansas, near where Lauck and Goff grew up, the show proved immensely popular. In 1936, Waters changed its name to "Pine Ridge" after the show's fictional town. Synopsis The series was created by co-stars Chester Lauck (who played Columbus "Lum" Edwards) and Norris Goff (Abner Peabody). Lum always pronounced his own name as Ed'erds and was very annoyed if Abner or anyone brought up his full first name. Huddleston Store And McKinzie Store
The Huddleston Store and McKinzie Store, also known as the Lum 'n' Abner Jot 'Em Down Store and Museum, are a historic museum property on Arkansas Highway 88 in Pine Ridge, Arkansas. These two wood-frame retail buildings are all that remain of the pre-1920 buildings of the town; they were constructed by Dick Huddleston in 1912 and A.A. McKinzie in 1904, respectively. Jot-Um-Down, North Carolina
Mulberry is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Surry County, North Carolina. The center of the community is roughly the intersection of Mulberry Church Road and Poplar Springs Road. Located on Mulberry Church Road is Mulberry Primitive Church and cemetery, the oldest church in the community and the origin of the community's name. The community is sometimes referred to as Jot-Um-Down for a former local community store that took this nickname from the Lum and Abner radio show. Landmarks in Mulberry include the Mulberry Primitive Baptist Church and cemetery, Bessie's Chapel church and Jot-Um-Down Volunteer Fire Department. A nineteenth century United States post office, named Venable, stood near here and was named for then area resident and Surry County sheriff, Stephen G. Venable.
