Calhoun County is a county located in the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2020 census, the population was 13,648, making it the fifth-least populous county in Florida. Its county seat is Blountstown. History Calhoun County was created in 1838. It was named for John C. Calhoun, member of the United States Senate from South Carolina and the seventh U.S. vice president, serving under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. The County originally was located between St. Joseph Bay and the Apalachicola River, with the county seat at St. Joseph (which was abandoned by 1844). The county was later expanded to the north with territory from Jackson and Washington counties. In 1913, part of Calhoun County was transferred to the new Bay County. State Road 69 (Florida)
State Road 69 (SR 69) is a road running through Calhoun and Jackson counties in northwest Florida. The road is almost entirely two-lanes wide. Route description State Road 69 begins at an unnamed connecting road between State Road 71 (North Main Street) and North Pear Street in Blountstown. After passing by the Blountstown Elementary School, a civic center and the intersection of Finlay Street, the route crosses a bridge over Simmons Creek and runs through Pine Island, where it intersects the southern terminus of CR 549 (John G. Bryant Road). North of there, it passes by the Nettle Ridge Cemetery and the church across from it, before crossing another bridge over a tributary of Simmons Creek where the route leaves Pine Island. The next moderate intersection is with CR 69A which branches off to the northwest and has its own intersection with CR 549 merely feet from the southern terminus. Blountstown is a city in Calhoun County, Florida, Calhoun County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,514 at the 2010 census, which represented an increase from 2,444 in 2000. It is the county seat of Calhoun County. Name Blountstown is named for John Blount, a Creek Indian chief who served as a guide for General Andrew Jackson during his invasion of Spanish Florida in 1818. This invasion was not directed at Spain, per se, but at Seminole Indians who would attack settlements north of Florida, then retreat to relative safety below the border of Spanish Florida. Also, Spain did not return escaped slaves to the U.S. In any case, this invasion caused Spain to sell Florida to the United States, since it was apparent that Spain would have a hard time defending against invasion.
