Pilungah Reserve
Pilungah Reserve, formerly Cravens Peak Reserve, is a nature reserve in Central West Queensland, Australia, south-west of Boulia and south of Mount Isa. It lies at the northern end of the Simpson Desert and includes parts of the bioregions known as the Simpson-Strezlecki Dunefields and Channel Country. Its western boundary borders the Northern Territory. It is owned by Bush Heritage Australia (BHA). History Pilungah contains fish fossils from the Devonian period. The traditional owners of Pilungah are the Wangkamadla (also spelt Wanggamala, Wangkamahdla, Wongkamala) people. The area was at the heart of the trade route stretching from the Gulf of Carpentaria in the north right down to South Australia along which the local narcotic plant, pituri, was exchanged for stone knives, seashells, and daggers made out of the tusks of dugongs. Dugong
The dugong (; ''Dugong dugon'') is a marine mammal. It is one of four living species of the order Sirenia, which also includes three species of manatees. It is the only living representative of the once-diverse family Dugongidae; its closest modern relative, Steller's sea cow (''Hydrodamalis gigas''), was hunted to extinction in the 18th century. The dugong is the only sirenian in its range, which spans the waters of some 40 countries and territories throughout the Indo-West Pacific. Munga-Thirri National Park
Munga-Thirri National Park, formerly known as the Simpson Desert National Park, is the largest national park in Queensland, Australia, 1,495 km west of Brisbane. The park covers an area of in the Simpson Desert surrounding Poeppel Corner in the west of the locality of Birdsville in the Central West region of Queensland. Landforms The main features of the park are large sand dunes which can be 50 m high and around 1 km apart. Most dunes are between 10 and 35 m in height. The longest sand ridge is 200 km in length. One of the most prominent dunes is called 'Big Red' and is located 35 km west of Birdsville. The dunes started to form 30,000 years ago. Also found in the park are salt lakes and claypans.
