Pilot Grove, Texas (Sometimes referred to as "Lickskillet") is a community located in Grayson County, Texas near the "Corners" region in Northeast Texas, which is where Grayson, Hunt, Fannin, and Collin county lines intersect. It is 700 feet above sea level. History The first settlement at what is now Pilot Grove was the result of French and Spanish expeditions in the area in 1836-1836. Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the area was inhabited by various Caddo groups, including the Kichai, Ionis, as well as the Tonkawa. In 1841, Bluford Clement immigrated to the area, then part of Fannin County, prior to Texas statehood. Beginning in 1857, Clement began platting Pilot Grove as well as established a general store and post office. Lee-Peacock Feud of 1867-1871 Pilot Grove also played host to several incidents involving the Lee-Peacock Feud of the area. Grayson County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 135,543. The county seat is Sherman. The county was founded in 1846 and is named after Peter Wagener Grayson, an attorney general of the Republic of Texas. Grayson County is included in the Sherman- Denison metropolitan statistical area, which is also included in the Dallas-Fort Worth- Arlington, combined statistical area. It is also part of the Texoma region, with proximity to Lake Texoma and the Red River. History The earliest known inhabitants of what is now Grayson County were Caddo Amerindian groups, including Tonkawa, Ionis, and Kichai. These groups engaged in agriculture and traded with Spanish and French colonists at trading posts along the Red River. Trading posts were established at Preston Bend on the Red River, Warren, and Pilot Grove during 1836 and 1837. Lester Ben Binion (November 20, 1904 – December 5, 1989), better known as Benny Binion, was an American gambling icon, career criminal, and convicted murderer who established illegal gambling operations in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, area. He would later relocate to Nevada, where gambling was legal, and open the successful Binion's Horseshoe casino in downtown Las Vegas. Early history Benny Binion was born and raised in Pilot Grove, Texas, north of Dallas. His parents initially kept him out of school due to poor health. His father, a horse trader, let him accompany him on trips. While the outdoor life restored his health, Binion never had any formal education.
