Archibald Pile
Archibald Jones Pile (died 1898) was lawyer and landowner in Barbados. He owned the Greens Estate, Saint George, Barbados, Saint George estate and part owned two others. Through acting as an attorney via his legal practice he controlled thirty estates in total. He was murdered when returning home after paying his labourers on Planter's Day. His wife was waiting for him to return home, when he eventually arrived somewhat late. He informed his wife that he had been shot and related how he had been walking his horse up the hill when he heard someone coming up behind him. He described his murderer as having a black face, although whether this was the natural appearance of an African Caribbean person or that of a White person remained a topic of debate. Despite rewards offered by the government and the Pile family, the identity of the murderer was never discovered. Francis Pile
Sir Francis Pile, 2nd Baronet (c. 1617 – 1649) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1645 and 1649. Pile was the son of Sir Francis Pile, 1st Baronet of Compton-Beauchamp and his wife Elizabeth Popham, daughter of Sir Francis Popham. He inherited the baronetcy on the death of his father in 1635. In 1645, Pile was elected Member of Parliament for Berkshire in the Long Parliament. He sat until his death before February 1649. Pile married firstly Mary Dunch, daughter of Samuel Dunch of Pusey, Berkshire, and secondly on 18th July 1639 Jane daughter of Rt Rev. Frederick Alfred Pile
General Sir Frederick Alfred Pile, 2nd Baronet, (14 September 1884 – 14 November 1976) was a senior British Army officer who served in both World Wars. In the Second World War he was General Officer Commanding Anti-Aircraft Command, one of the elements that protected Britain from aerial attack. Early life Pile was born in Dublin as the second child of Sir Thomas Devereux Pile, 1st Baronet and his wife, Caroline Maude Nicholson, Sir Thomas served as the Lord Mayor of Dublin from 1900 to 1901. Pile had an older sister and two younger brothers. His youngest brother, Cyril John Pile, served in the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War, and was killed in action in 1917. Pile was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1904. He initially served in India. William Pile (10 October 1823 – 5 June 1873) was a British shipbuilder. 'His genius was displayed in the building of ships, wherein he was not excelled. As Watt was great as a builder of engines; and Stephenson was great as a builder of railways; so William Pile was great as a builder of ships.'The Sunderland Times, June 10, 1873 He was the first to introduce the Clipper class of ship to the river Wear, Sunderland. A testament to his art can be seen today, the Composite Clipper ship ''City of Adelaide''.
