Pigi ( el, Πηγή) is a village located in the Famagusta District of Cyprus, south of Lefkoniko, in the Mesaoria plain. The name means "water well". De Jure
In law and government, ''de jure'' ( ; , "by law") describes practices that are legally recognized, regardless of whether the practice exists in reality. Famagusta District
Famagusta District ( gr, Επαρχία Αμμοχώστου, Eparchia Ammochostu; tr, Mağusa kazası) is one of the six districts of Cyprus. Its main town is the island's most important port, Famagusta. History Most of the district has been under Turkish control since the 1974 invasion. Since 1998, the northeastern section, including the Karpaz Peninsula, has been administered separately as the İskele District, a division not recognized by the Republic of Cyprus and the UN. De Facto
''De facto'' ( ; , "in fact") describes practices that exist in reality, whether or not they are officially recognized by laws or other formal norms. Lefkoniko
Lefkoniko ( el, Λευκόνοικο; tr, Lefkonuk or ) is a town in the Mesaoria Plain under the ''de facto'' control of Northern Cyprus, claimed by Cyprus. Lefkoniko is the birthplace of Cypriot national poet Vasilis Michaelides and is known for its lace. Geçitkale Air Base of the Turkish Air Force is near Lefkoniko. Mesaoria
The Mesaoria ( el, Μεσαορία, tr, Mesarya) is a broad, sweeping plain which makes up the north centre of the island of Cyprus. Geography The Mesaoria is the name given to the broad tract of plain which extends across the island from the Bay of Famagusta in the east to that of Morphou in the west, which is a length of 96 km, with a breadth varying from 16 to 32 km. The streams which traverse it are mere winter torrents, which descend from the southern chain but scarcely reach the sea. The Pedias (Pediaeus) and lalias (Yialias, Idalias) lose most of their flood waters in the marshes about Salamis, near the Bay of Famagusta. The Pedias rises near Machaira and passes close to Nicosia, indeed flowed through it before the river was diverted by the Venetians. Peristeronopigi
Peristeronopigi or Pigi–Peristerona ( el, Περιστερωνοπηγή; tr, Alaniçi) is a village located in the Famagusta District of Cyprus, south of Lefkoniko, in the Mesaoria plain. Historically, Peristeronopigi consisted of two continuous villages: Peristerona (meaning "pigeon nest") in the south and Pigi ("water well") in the north.
