Pigalle Wonder
Pigalle Wonder was a racing greyhound during the late 1950s and early 1960s. He was the United Kingdom Greyhound of the Year and won the sports top accolade by winning the 1959 English Greyhound Derby. 1956 He was whelped in March 1956 and bred by Tom Murphy in County Kilkenny, and was reared under the name Prairie Champion. 1957 His first race was on 10 October 1957, when he participated in the McCalmont Cup at Kilkenny under the name of Prairie Champion. He won his heat by ten lengths in 29.80 seconds and then won the final. After recording 29.10 seconds in a 525 yards trial at Harold's Cross Stadium he was bought by Al Burnett, who was known for owning the Pigalle Club in London. 1958 He was subsequently renamed Pigalle Wonder and was moved to Jim Syder Jr. as his trainer at Wembley. Pigalle Club
The Pigalle Club was a supper club and live music venue in Piccadilly, in the West End of London, West End area of Central London. It was owned by Vince Power, John Vincent Power. Dave West (entrepreneur), Dave West also owned shares in the Pigalle Club. Originally located at another site in Piccadilly, the club re-opened in April 2006. Designed by Stephen Donald and furnished by Shaun Clarkson, the sophisticated Pigalle Club was inspired by 1940s aesthetics. It offered fine dining and live musical entertainment, with tables clustered around the stage. The 400-capacity venue hosted artists performing jazz, and occasionally soul music, soul and pop music, pop music, alongside cabaret and burlesque acts. The Beatles played a concert at the Pigalle on 21 April 1963. Shelbourne Park
Shelbourne Park is a greyhound racing stadium in the south Dublin inner city suburb of Ringsend. Greyhound Racing Opening The plans to open a greyhound track in Dublin were drawn up by Paddy O’Donoghue, Jerry Collins, Patsy McAlinden and Jim Clarke. Shelbourne Park opened on 14 May 1927 hot on the heels of Celtic Park (Belfast). The stadium located in the docklands in Ringsend was Dublin's answer to the Belfast track and the pair became the two most greyhound prestigious tracks in Irish racing. When opening in 1927 the track employed four resident trainers in Mick Horan, Paddy Quigley, Billy Donoghue and Ben Scally. The 1960 Irish Greyhound Derby took place during July and August with the final being held at Shelbourne Park in Dublin on 13 August 1960. The winner Perrys Apple won £1,000 and was owned and trained by Paddy Behan and bred by Charlie Weld. The 1960 Greyhound Derby took place during June with the final being held on 25 June 1960 at White City Stadium. The winner Duleek Dandy received £2,000 for the husband and wife team of Bill Dash (trainer) and Vicki Dash (owner). Harringay Stadium
Harringay Stadium was a major greyhound racing and motorcycle speedway venue in Harringay, north London. It was built and opened in 1927 and closed in 1987. Construction Harringay Stadium was the third greyhound racing stadium to open in Britain. It was owned by the Greyhound Racing Association Ltd (GRA). After great success with their first track at Belle Vue in Manchester in 1926, they opened both White City and Harringay stadiums in 1927. The driving force behind the GRA, and its managing director until the 1960s, was Brigadier-General Alfred Critchley, who wrote in his autobiography that, when he first learned of greyhound racing, "It immediately occurred to me that this might prove to be the poor man's racecourse". Apparently his interest in how the lower-paid classes were losing money by backing horses was born out of concern for his valet who lost large sums betting on horse racing. TV Trophy (greyhounds)
The Television Trophy (TV Trophy for short) is a greyhound racing competition held annually. It was inaugurated in 1952 and shown on the BBC. A different venue was chosen each year over the marathon distance of the relevant track. The competition consisted of heats (normally three) and a final one week later. The BBC continued to televise the event from 1952 until 1996 on Sportsview (later Sportsnight). When Sportsnight ended the competition coverage it switched to Sky Sports which resulted in two editions of the 1997 event, the first being the last BBC event and the second sponsored by the Evening Standard being the inaugural Sky event. In 2018 the Greyhound Board of Great Britain, who hold the rights of the competition, invited tracks to tender for its hosting following the shock closure of Towcester Greyhound Stadium. ''Sportsnight'' was a midweek BBC television sports programme that ran from 1968 until 1997. Sportsview ''Sportsnight'' was a successor to ''Sportsview'' which started on 8 April 1954. ''Sportsview'' was devised by Paul Fox, later Controller of BBC1 and Peter Dimmock was the original host for a decade (and did host occasional editions from 1964 to 1968). The BBC Sports Personality of the Year award evolved as a spin-off from ''Sportsview'' when the last show of its inception year featured the ''Sports Review of 1954''. Wembley Greyhounds was the greyhound racing operation held at Wembley Stadium in London. History Origins After the 1924-25 British Empire Exhibition Wembley Stadium was in liquidation before eventually being purchased by Arthur Elvin. For the stadium to survive into the future it required much needed revenue and it was greyhound racing that provided it.
