Pietà (Cosmè Tura)
''Pietà'' is a tempera on panel painting by Cosmè Tura, measuring 47.7 cm by 33.5 cm. It is now in the Museo Correr in Venice, to which it was left with the rest of the collection of Teodoro Correr on 1 January 1830. It was attributed to Luca d'Olanda until 1859, when Vincenzo Lazari recognised it as a work by Tura. By comparison with the same artist's ''Calliope'' and his Roverella Altarpiece, it has been dated to around 1460. Description and style The work presents a fairly classic iconography, that of Vesperbild, slightly revisited, where the dimension of pain is sublimated. Mary is seen seated on the edge of the vault, in the center of the composition, holding the body of her dead son; the Calvary is in the background. The pictorial quality is very high, in some points the underlying drawing made directly on the plaster layer is visible, it can be admired a wise use of lacquers and oil glazing. Cosmè Tura
Cosmê Tura (c. 1430 – 1495), also known as Il Cosmè or Cosimo Tura (), was an Italian early-Renaissance (or Quattrocento) painter and considered one of the founders of the School of Ferrara (Painting), School of Ferrara. Biography Formation The painter's origins are humble: he was born in Ferrara, the son of a shoemaker named Domenico. There is no news on his apprenticeship, which Vasari linked to the mysterious artist Galasso Ferrarese, an almost mythical figure, linked by friendship to Piero della Francesca. The first documents concerning him are dated to the two-year period 1451–1452, when he decorated some objects for the Este court, such as some flags with Este coats of arms for the Castle or a helmet given as a prize to the winner of a tournament. Studiolo Of The Palazzo Belfiore
The Studiolo of the Palazzo Belfiore was a former study, or room for intellectual pursuits, that was once found in a razed Renaissance palace in Ferrara, region of Emilia-Romagna, Italy. While the palace has disappeared, records do list the paintings, consisting of depictions of muses, that hung in the room. These secular works are now dispersed across museums, but their collective presences recall the renewed attention of Renaissance patrons to symbols from classic mythology. The palace, like the Palazzo Schifanoia, is described now a ''delizia'' of the Este dynasty, which are now considered semi-rural palaces for the enjoyment of ''delights''. The palace was commissioned in 1447 by Leonello d'Este but completed by Borso d'Este around 1463. Roverella Altarpiece
The Roverella Altarpiece was a religious painting by Cosmè Tura completed during 1470–1474 using oil and egg-tempera on poplar panel work, commissioned by abbot and cardinal Bartolomeo Roverella for San Giorgio fuori le mura in Ferrara in memory of his brother bishop Lorenzo Roverella. It was one of the most significant works of the artist and of the Ferrara Renaissance in general. It was damaged in an explosion in 1709 and moved out of the church. It is now dismembered and their panels split up between several museums. Description An 18th century description of the altarpiece was made by Girolamo Baruffaldi. Based on that information Maurizio Bonora created a reconstruction with the technique of graphite on paper. Andrea Mantegna
Andrea Mantegna (, , ; September 13, 1506) was an Italian painter, a student of Roman archeology, and son-in-law of Jacopo Bellini. Like other artists of the time, Mantegna experimented with perspective, e.g. by lowering the horizon in order to create a sense of greater monumentality.
