Pietro Degli Antonii
Pietro degli Antonii (16 May 1639 – 25 September 1720) was an Italian composer. Life Pietro degli Antonii, son of a trombonist, spent his entire life in Bologna where he was born and died and around 1670 became a member of the prestigious Accademia Filarmonica, of which he was elected chairman several times. He was also director of music in three important churches in his home town. With his brother (1636-1698) and Giovanni Battista Vitali, he is regarded as an important representative of the after Maurizio Cazzati. His main merit is his contribution to the development of the sonata da chiesa and the sonata da camera. His preference for slow, melodious movements based on singing is particularly noteworthy. Thus a trio sonata published in 1680 bears the movement names ''Largo - Lento - Grave - Lento - Grave''. The Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna ("philharmonic academy of Bologna"; sometimes known in English as the Bologna Academy of Music) is a music education institution in Bologna, Italy. The Accademia de' Filarmonici was founded as an association of musicians in Bologna in 1666 by Vincenzo Maria Carrati. Saint Anthony of Padua was chosen as the patron saint, and an organ with the motto ''Unitate melos'' as the emblem. Through the influence of Pietro Ottoboni, the statute of the academy was approved by Clement XI in 1716. In 1749 the Benedict XIV decreed that the Accademia could award the title of Maestro di cappella. Giovanni Battista Vitali
Giovanni Battista Vitali (18 February 1632 – 12 October 1692) was an Italian composer and violone player. Life and career Vitali was born in Bologna and spent all of his life in the Emilian region, moving to Modena in 1674. His teacher in his early years was probably Maurizio Cazzati (1616–1678), ''maestro di cappella'' at the main church in Bologna, San Petronio Basilica from 1657 to 1671. The first documented evidence of Vitali’s musical activities appears in the records of the San Petronio orchestra for 1658, when he is listed under the title ‘Violoni’,. referring to the cello/bass instrument that he played (to be discussed below). Vitali remained in the orchestra until 1673, when he took up an appointment as ''maestro di cappella'' at the chapel of the Confraternità del Rosario, Bologna. Maurizio Cazzati (1 March 1616 – 28 September 1678) was a northern Italian composer of the seventeenth century. Biography Cazzati was born in Luzzara in the Duchy of Mantua. Originating in the early 17th century, the trio sonata was a favorite chamber ensemble combination in the Baroque era. Basic structure The trio sonata typically consisted of three parts, two violins and (basso) continuo.
